Seperating articles?
editShouldn't there be a separate article on the locomotive type (Challenger)? The article is titled for a single locomotive which was one of the type. 18:16, 19 January 2009 (UTC)
- I think exactly the same, why is 3985 having to contain all Challenger data? Lukeno94 (talk) 11:00, 14 April 2011 (UTC)
- there is. At least now, perhaps not when you 1st asked. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Union_Pacific_Challenger Ken (talk) 16:14, 20 December 2013 (UTC)

Update Status to Retired pending better sources?
editIn January 2020 Ed Dickens commented on a Facebook post that UP 3985 is currently retired, due to Union Pacific only having the resources to operate two steam engines at a time; and there are no upcoming plans to return UP 3985 to service. Since it was posted in a closed Facebook group; I recommend updating this page to including that information if a more public news source such as Trains, Railfan and Railroad or other railroad preservation focused articles report the news. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Xboxtravis7992 (talk • contribs) 21:10, 2 January 2020 (UTC)

- We have since found official sources confirming the retirement of 3985. Both of them are now being used. As sad as it is, be grateful for the steam team allowing the 3985 to run many amazing excursions during its 29 years, and for choosing 4014 as an appropriate successor.Davidng913 (talk) 17:24, 21 April 2020 (UTC)

Because I have a source to validate on the 3985 won't run for a while. it comes from the railroad itself. 4294 ProYT (talk) 08:43, 18 September 2021 (UTC)

There are several things in the attic that needs to be changed and fixed. First of, in the History section were it takes about the years of it in service, the hyphen's needs to be replaced with the en dash's, examples: "Revenue service and retirement (1943-1957)" and "Restoration and excursion career (1981-2010)" to "Revenue service and retirement (1943–1957)" and "Restoration and excursion career (1981–2010)". Additionally, the source that says the year the engine was restored is correct, but the source doesn't say what month it was restored in, therefore it should just say and be kept as 1981. Even the "Restoration and excursion career" info in the History section also says April 1981, that one also needs to be changed to 1981, according to the source. 70.88.207.142 (talk) 20:57, 26 September 2021 (UTC)

Another edit that hasn’t been changed yet is the info of it’s first run in 1981. It says "April 1981 (excursion service)" were it should say "1981 (excursion services)", because again, the source doesn’t say what month it was restored in, it just says 1981. 173.13.73.146 (talk) 13:51, 30 September 2021 (UTC)
- Not done. Found a ref mentioning a month. ◢ Ganbaruby! (talk) 04:06, 1 October 2021 (UTC)

The other part that doesn’t have an en dash is the "Restoration and excursion career (2010-present)" it’s hyphen needs to be replaced with an en dash, as shown here: "Restoration and excursion career (2010-present)" to "Restoration and excursion career (2010–present)"
P.S. Also now that a source is found on the month the engine was restored in, the "First run" info in the infobox should be changed to "1981 (excursion service)" to "March 1981 (excursion service)". 70.88.207.142 (talk) 20:07, 3 October 2021 (UTC)

3985 will be back in steam once it gets its tender back and make 4014 have its tender back by converting a new set of oil.
- Not done: it's not clear what changes you want to be made. Please mention the specific changes in a "change X to Y" format and provide a reliable source if appropriate. ScottishFinnishRadish (talk) 18:52, 23 January 2022 (UTC)
Union Pacific #3985 has been donated to RRHMA
editIn an E-mail sent out by Union Pacific, it seems that #3985 has been donated to Railroading Heritage of Midwest America along with 2-10-2 #5511, DDA40X #6936, and numerous other pieces of equipment. I feel it would be appropriate to add this new information to the article when possible.
Union Pacific also put this out on their official website: https://www.up.com/media/releases/challenger-3985-donation-nr-220428.htm — Preceding unsigned comment added by Pepsi Doggo (talk • contribs) 19:11, 28 April 2022 (UTC)
