merge

edit

I don't think it is a good idea to merge the mentor-page with the University of Copenhagen page. The content is not similar enough, even though the mentor-page relates to an activity at the university. There are numerous such activities and groups at the university, and if they should all be described at the University of Copenhagen page, the page would be endless. It is better just to link or refer to the mentorpage.Adba 14:27, 13 April 2007 (UTC)Reply

I would say a) expand the mentor page to cover other student groups or b) delete it. --dllu 01:55, 16 April 2007 (UTC)Reply
Agreed. Merging these pages doesn't make any sense. Since no other comments have been made in the past month I'll remove the merge sign. Superdix 22:24, 9 June 2007 (UTC)Reply

I've created links to subpages in a more formalised way, [KU:Topic], to differentiate with other universities, faculties and institutes. C64lives 14:19, 20 Sep 2003 (UTC)

Sounds like a good convention :). I suggest we use it in those cases where the names are generel, like "KU:Faculty of Natural Sciences", and not fx "DIKU". (though we may still create a shortcut at KU:DIKU)
Thue 19:54, 20 Sep 2003 (UTC)

On second though I like University of Copenhagen prefix that Angela added better.
Thue 08:03, 21 Sep 2003 (UTC)

I think I moved all these [KU:...] pages a while ago, but if there were any others, they might not be accessible anymore due to this bug. Angela. 23:39, 31 May 2004 (UTC)Reply

The following have been turned into redirects to University of Copenhagen since they have no useful content. As and when content for each faculty arrives, the listing for that faculty on the University page should be pointed back to it, but I don't think it's a good idea to link to the redirects since clicking will just go around a circle and confuse the user. Onebyone 04:26, 8 Dec 2003 (UTC)

good idea Thue 23:25, 8 Dec 2003 (UTC)

Turning them into redirect discourages the creation of their articles since it is linked from nowhere. I will delete them and create links in this article if no one objects. --Jiang 14:39, 3 Jan 2004 (UTC)

Private school

edit

User:PZFUN wrote that the University of Copenhagen is a private school. But I was under the impression that it was funded by the government (at least I don't pay tuition fees), which contradics that, no? looking at Public school the term seems not to be well defined for international usage, but State school seems appropriate. Thue | talk 11:57, 17 Dec 2004 (UTC)

Yes, I agree with you. I will change it to state school. Páll 15:52, 17 Dec 2004 (UTC)

Since 2004, Danish universities have had the status of being 'self-owning institutions', which means that they are not owned by the state, but that they bear certain responsibilities towards it. State school sounds misleading.

Until ~1970 the university was sovereign, which means it was like an independent state. With the student uprising in 1968 the university was basically annexed by the state. This lasted until the late 1990 where a slow privatization process was stated. In 2006 however the principal was directly appointed by the Ministry of Science, so it can not be called independent or private in any way yet. Carewolf (talk) 15:45, 24 August 2008 (UTC)Reply

Infobox

edit

I made an infobox for Danish universities (Template:Infobox Danish University). It is simply copied from the Swedish one, but adapted to the info I could find on the Copenhagen University website. I couldn't find any numbers on how to break up the student body into undergraduate and doctoral students, nor on how large a part of the staff is actually teaching staff. Look at the Swedish box at Uppsala University for comparison. If these things can be found, the template can be adjusted accordingly. "Athletics" is important at American universities and doesn't really need to be in the infobox for European universities any more than a lot of other student activities or societies. / up◦land 23:04, 17 Dec 2004 (UTC)

Improvements

edit

I have updated the list of notable faculty and alumni and added a paragraph about KUs reputation and university ranking.--Mecil 18:39, 4 December 2005 (UTC)Reply

As this list can no doubt grow much longer, I think you should consider just mentioning a handful of the most well-known names in a paragraph here, and branching the long list off to a separate List of University of Copenhagen people, but it really needs some structure and biographical annotation. Take a look at List of Uppsala University people (which I have made), for an example of one way to do this. up◦land 08:40, 5 December 2005 (UTC)Reply
That is a very nicely made list for Uppsala University. Hopefully we will over time create a similar one for the University of Copenhagen. As of now the list is just structured alphabetically by surname. The list was there before and I made some additions of Nobel laureates and Danish Prime Ministers. I believe people from both categories must included in any list of notables. --Mecil 13:13, 5 December 2005 (UTC)Reply

Coat of arms

edit

The section about the seal / coat of arms could be improved by adding a bit about the former symbol used during the union with Norway. This seal showed symbols of both countries. Examples are depicted in both Herlev Church and Ganløse Church. Erling Svane's "I Skjoldet springe Løver" (p. 138), confirms the person depicted as King Christian III. Denmark's first University?

edit
The University of Copenhagen was founded
in 1479 as the first university in Denmark.

I have often seen it stated that the Studium Generale in Lund (at that time a Danish town), founded in 1425 and started in 1438 was the first university of Denmark (and Scandinavia). (The University of Lund has made requests to count their age from the founding of the Studio Generale, but that has been denied. The Studio Generale was closed at the time of the protestant reformation, and the University of Lund opened some time after that.) —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 85.224.153.255 (talk) 11:51, 16 January 2007 (UTC).Reply

Logged in to add the forgotten signature above - guess I was beaten to it  ;) /Dcastor 11:59, 16 January 2007 (UTC)Reply
I have done some more reading and seen no objections, so I change in accordance with the refered statement above. /Dcastor 13:30, 25 January 2007 (UTC)Reply

List of notable alumni

edit

Am I the only one who thinks the list is a bit too long. I understand having people like Niels Bohr and Grundtvig on the list, but Per Stig Møller and Thor Petersen are not notable enough in my opinion. Most of the names will only make sense to a Dane, and are not notable on a global scale. Snailwalker | talk 18:53, 3 February 2007 (UTC)Reply

I agree. And I am not even sure all of those are actual alumni - the list just says "notable people".·Maunus· ·ƛ· 23:08, 17 March 2007 (UTC)Reply
I'm starting to agree, even if I did most of the work on this list myself back in 2005. Just read it again and removed the danish UN ambassador. We can debate if key government ministers are notable enough, but if we start to include ambassadors the list will become unmanageable quite soon. I'd like to see a list that includes Nobel laureates and other key people such as Naur, the Bartholin's, Holberg and the like, but I am unsure what criteria we can use that isn't just arbitrary. Any good ideas? Mecil (talk) 06:44, 5 January 2009 (UTC)Reply

Overrepresentation of females

edit

"Founded in 1479, it has more than 37,000 students, a majority of which are female"

Is the overrepresentation of females really significant enough to warrant mention in the first paragraph? Does anyone have the actual numbers on this? —The preceding unsigned comment was added by Kranak (talkcontribs) 13:00, 9 May 2007 (UTC).Reply

I checked the numbers. Total number of students, 33.553, women 19.159 -- 57%. I guess that's significant enough to warrant a mention. I'll correct the numbers on the article as well. Superdix 22:21, 9 June 2007 (UTC)Reply
I think you need cite a reference at some point, Jeffrey.Kleykamp 22:24, 9 June 2007 (UTC)Reply
I added a link to the student body size document under External links; I guess someone needs to go over the entire document and check for references and add them at some point (no references as of now!) maybe that'll be me after my exams. Superdix 09:07, 10 June 2007 (UTC)Reply

Separate notable alumni from Nobel laureates?

edit

I believe some of the Nobel laureates associated with the University of Copenhagen did not necessarily study at the University; they did, however, have positions and pursued their research there. I suggest we make a separate list for the Nobel laureates. Superdix 09:05, 10 June 2007 (UTC)Reply

Logo or seal?

edit

I've noticed that articles relating to most major universities (Virginia Tech, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, University of Oxford, Harvard University, Lund University, etc.) use seals on their Wikipedia articles. The image currently set as the title image for the article is File:University of Copenhagen Seal Not Cropped.jpg, which is the official logo of the university.[1] However, I think it would be more appropriate to use its seal: File:Logo ku.svg - Lasse Havelund (p) (t) 14:25, 12 May 2008 (UTC)Reply

The seal of the Copenhagen University is never used alone: "Seglene må ikke benyttes for sig, men skal indgå som den øverste cirkel i bomærket." (the seals may not be used seperately, it must always be the top circle in the logo) http://www2.adm.ku.dk/designmanual/default.asp?id=10&niveau=3). As such, using the seal alone would be inappropriate. (full disclosure, in case it matters to anyone: I'm employed at the communications department at the University of Copenhagen). Jlaugesen (talk) 14:03, 12 May 2008 (UTC)Reply
Ah, in that case, the logo should be substituted either by:
- An SVG version of the current logo, Image:University_of_Copenhagen_Seal_Not_Cropped.jpg should be uploaded without the white background, or
- A raster PNG version of the current logo should be uploaded, without the white background. - Lasse Havelund (p) (t) 14:25, 12 May 2008 (UTC)Reply
I have illustrator/eps version at work, I think Illustrator can make an svg from that. It's on my todo-list for tomorrow :) Jlaugesen (talk) 14:59, 12 May 2008 (UTC)Reply
You read my mind but use PNG instead in sufficiently low resolution. EconomicsGuy (talk) 15:04, 12 May 2008 (UTC)Reply
(edit conflict) A raster version in sufficiently low resolution would be the appropriate solution per WP:NFCC (read the part about resolution of the image). I notice that the university already provides logos in EPS format for download. Surely we can create an appropriate version from one of them and add a proper fair use rationale. Seems like a minor and easy to resolve issue to me. EconomicsGuy (talk) 15:03, 12 May 2008 (UTC)Reply
Is it necessarily a problem to use an SVG? I mean, what would Template:SVG-Logo be for, otherwise? - Lasse Havelund (p) (t) 19:16, 12 May 2008 (UTC)Reply
No, but it serves little purpose since WP:NFCC does not allow us to render the SVG in a resolution that would take advantage of the image being a vector image rather than a raster image. It's going to be rendered by the MediaWiki software anyway and the purpose of using a SVG image will be defeated. EconomicsGuy (talk) 19:25, 12 May 2008 (UTC)Reply
So, I've got a png version of the logo ready: KU logo (an svg is ready as well, if needed). But I'm short on time - can someone point me to the right template for uploading (or even better, upload it to wikipedia for me?) Jlaugesen (talk) 11:15, 13 May 2008 (UTC)Reply
Done. If you want credit for the image you can add a line in the summary section at Image:University of Copenhagen logo.png. EconomicsGuy (talk) 15:43, 13 May 2008 (UTC)Reply
Thank you very much - Jlaugesen (talk) 09:01, 14 May 2008 (UTC)Reply

Danish System of Grading

I wonder whether it would be a good idea to adress the Danish grading system? Alot of foreign collegeadvisors and professers look to this page for info on the university of danish applicants. Latin text of seal

edit

Does the seal actually read "Sigillum Universitatis Hafniensis A Christiano III Rege Restauravit"? The image is too small to make out the text, and "restauravit" is found all over the web as the text - but Latin-wise, it doesn't make to much sense: "Seal of Copenhagen University, by King Christian III He Has Restored". I was expecting "Restauratae": "Seal of the C. University, which has been restaured by King Christian III". Anyone with more knowledge of the actual seal? The article University of Copenhagen Center for Planetary Research has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

Non-notable content on a former minor institution. All references seem to be to primary sources, and the content seems to be somewhat promotional, in that it adds positive-sounding descriptions to an otherwise non-notable entity. As the centre has been closed, it seems this article is not relevant.

While all constructive contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, pages may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

Please consider improving the page to address the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated}} will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. In particular, the speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. I thought it would be good to put this here to inform those involved with editing pages of the university. Shadowssettle(talk) 08:58, 29 April 2019 (UTC)Reply
