Text and/or other creative content from this version of Unsaturated hydrocarbon was copied or moved into Alkene on 5 October 2023. The former page's history now serves to provide attribution for that content in the latter page, and it must not be deleted as long as the latter page exists. |

editIt seems to me this should not redirect to Alkene because Alkynes also are unsaturated hydrocarbons. Perhaps a disambig would be appropriate.

- There was a short article before it turned into a redirect. I have now restored the article since to point "unsaturated hydrocarbon" to just alkenes is a bit unfair and inaccurate. Kimchi.sg 16:26, 25 November 2006 (UTC)

Undo student work
editA well intentioned student, doing their homework, impacted this article in a nonpositive way. https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Unsaturated_hydrocarbon&diff=899731803&oldid=896549358. The article became sort of a textbook and how-to guide. --Smokefoot (talk) 14:53, 27 September 2023 (UTC)
Split idea
editAs discussed at Wikipedia_talk:WikiProject_Chemistry#Unsaturated_hydrocarbon_article_to_omit_aromatics?, I propose to split this article and more. Reasoning:
- this article discusses mainly alkenes, for which we have a good article focused on that topic.
- this article sometimes discusses alkynes, for which we have a good article focused on that topic.
- this article mentions occasionally aromatic compoundss, for which we have a good article focused on that topic. The classification of aromatic compounds as unsaturated is unclear. So the scope is uncertain.
Much content (such as listing of reactions, properties) overlaps with the core articles alkenes, alkynes, and aromatic compounds, which makes curation difficult because editors are forced to cover one more article. The situation is confusing for readers. The coverage here is uneven, and we should probably focus on making sure that the core articles are excellent.
Yes, Wikipedia needs an article on unsaturation, which we have Unsaturated and saturated compounds, which will he revised.--Smokefoot (talk) 02:38, 30 September 2023 (UTC)
- Support though technically this is more a multi-target WP:MERGE or WP:SECTIONMOVE given the targets already exist. Once complete, I imagine unsaturated hydrocarbon can then redirect to saturated and unsaturated compounds? Alternatively, it could become a chemindex with links to the alkene, alkyne, aromatic compounds, etc. When completed, we'll have to pay close attention to WP:CWW and leave proper edit summaries and documentation on the talk pages to provide attribution to where the content originated, especially since the source page won't redirect to any of the target pages. - @Mdewman6:. I will need your help because I do not understand the mechanics of WP:CWW. Youre correct: this change is more of a split and we may end up with a disambiguation (to alkene, alkyne, arene, and saturated vs unsaturated). I will start by moving the reactions, almost exclusively to alkene. --Smokefoot (talk) 15:35, 5 October 2023 (UTC)
- @Smokefoot: no problem, the most important thing is to link to where you're moving content when you copy and paste it elsewhere, and to link to where content originated when you paste it into the other article. When you're done, I can go back and add {{copied}} templates to talk pages and such. Mdewman6 (talk) 16:26, 5 October 2023 (UTC)
