Requested move
editUnterlinden Museum → Musée d'Unterlinden — Revert move of French museum to actual name -- we don't have an Orsay Museum article, do we? -- over altered redirect. Altered with no reason, near as I can tell. Part of User:Gene Nygaard's crusade, it looks like. (originally submitted to WP:RM Calton) Patstuarttalk|edits 07:18, 6 December 2006 (UTC)

- Oppose move: keep the English title. Bubba ditto 23:54, 29 November 2006 (UTC)
Support - Proper names should be left ... "proper" (for lack of a better word). In english it IS a museum (no caps) but it's NAMED Musée d'Unterlinden (caps). --Maelwys 12:41, 6 December 2006 (UTC)- Oppose - Although I stand by my argument, I've since been pointed at WP:UE and see that WP policy is quite clear on this one, so I yield to official policy. It also makes me wonder what the point of this proposed move even is, since policy is clear on it, and it seems that policy was pointed out by the very person that started the proposal... --Maelwys 19:32, 11 December 2006 (UTC)
- Certain Wikipedians just oppose policy; see the bottom of Talk:Tenedos. Septentrionalis PMAnderson 22:22, 11 December 2006 (UTC)

- Oppose The question is, what do English speakers call it? Musée d'Orsay is well known under that name; this isn't. Septentrionalis 21:18, 6 December 2006 (UTC)
- Oppose especially strongly on the basis of unwarranted red herrings thrown out by Calton accusing me of some "crusade". When I moved it, there was no other spelling used in the article itself, there had never been any other spelling used in the article itself, and to this day no other spelling has been used in the article itself. Clearly a case of how it is best known in English. Why it was created as "Musée d´Unterlinden" and later moved to "Musée d'Unterlinden" is one of those unexplained mysteries.Gene Nygaard 19:27, 7 December 2006 (UTC)
- Oppose - WP:NC says to always use English names, and it applies well in this instance. The support vote appears to not understand this guide (or, if this isn't true, the explanation didn't show that). Patstuarttalk|edits 19:12, 11 December 2006 (UTC)
data
editGoogle: 730 for Musee d'Unterlinden, 855 for Unterlinden Museum, including this French site, which chooses to so translate it. Septentrionalis 21:18, 6 December 2006 (UTC)
- I consider those two numbers to be statistically close enough together to show that there is no clear preference given to either one over the other. In that case, I think that we should default to the proper name of the museum, which is Musee d'Unterlinden. --Maelwys 02:10, 7 December 2006 (UTC)
Discussion
edit- Add any additional comments:
Has anyone asked museum representatives if they have an official or preferred English spelling? I e-mailed them last week (in English), however have not yet received a response. Perhaps someone in France could ask in person. Bendono 23:54, 11 December 2006 (UTC)

Official English name
editA month ago a sent a request to the museum to inquire about an official or preferred English rendition. At last I got a response:
Le musée d'Unterlinden se traduit en anglais par "Unterlinden Museum".
This is confirmation that the present name seems to be fine. Bendono 14:51, 12 January 2007 (UTC)
