I am trying to put together a list of the places where the UAA has received what Wikipedia would call 'significant coverage'. I would also like to request that a Wikipedia user that speaks Uyghur be asked to check out this page.
[6] This is a pretty good one too- "The Uyghur American Association (UAA) UAA is based in Washington DC. It is a non-political, non-profit and voluntary association. The association works as an umbrella organization for the Uyghurs residing in different parts of the United States and Canada. It arranges religious festivals, social get-togethers, and cultural events. The association participates in the cultural life of the local community as a representative of the Uyghur cul ture. The main goals of the organiza tion include: • Promoting activities for a better understanding of Uyghur culture and exchange of information between Uyghurs of America and Uyghurs in other parts of the world; • Bringing all Uyghurs together from around the world under one roof to fight for their cause; and • Organizing annual conventions/con gresses of ethnic Uyghurs to share their experiences." [7] "One of the key solidarity Uyghur diasporic group is the Uyghur American Association (UAA), based in Washington DC and was founded in May 1998 at the First Uyghur American Congress. Since then, the UAA has organised several congresses to unify the Uyghur community living in the U.S. and to represent the collective voice of the Uyghurs. The UAA organises public lectures and forums to raise awareness regarding the plight of their people in Xinjiang and has held demonstrations in front of the Chinese Embassy in Washington D.C and during offcial visits of top Chinese leaders to the U.S.34 The UAA also gathers information and coordinates action, such as issuing magazines and weekly information via e-mails. They also maintain close contact with the American Congress and the U.S. State Department. In 2004, the UAA organised a symposium where young Uyghur professionals met with American Congressmen to voice the plight of their brethren in Xinjiang.35 The UAA was able to garner the support of the Congressmen to sponsor a bill calling on China to end repression of Tibetans and Uyghurs.36 During President Barrack 2bama¶s visit to China in 200, the UAA urged him to inform China of its social responsibilities to the Uyghurs and improve human rights conditions in Xinjiang.37 The UAA also works with international human rights groups such as Amnesty International (AI) and Human Rights Watch (HRW). It has undertaken the Uyghur Human Rights Project (UHRP) as part of its struggle to improve human rights conditions. The UAA has been linked with other Uyghur diaspora in the U.S., Europe, Turkey, Central Asia and Australia. The UAA has also helped to promote the Uyghur language, history, culture and heritage in the U.S. through conferences." Geographyinitiative (talk) 01:24, 10 May 2020 (UTC)Reply
I would like the admins who consider this article for the mainspace to also take a look at the Tianshannet page that I created recently. Since 2001, Tianshannet has been the sole official media outlet in Xinjiang, but there's very little substantial coverage of the organization, especially in English. Xinjiang/East Turkestan is a little understood area of our world, and the number of references I have provided on this page is more than what we see on any given page for the various counties of Hotan Prefecture, Kashgar Prefecture, etc which until recently were basically blank pages. Based on the sources I compiled and the coverage above combined with my personal experience editing Xinjiang-related pages over the past six months, I think UAA is clearly a prominent organization within the context of Xinjiang and the Uyghur American community, which itself is extremely small. I will of course keep working on building the page and sources. Geographyinitiative (talk) 02:46, 10 May 2020 (UTC)(modified)Reply
