Relationship between SimGraphics and virtual YouTuber

edit

Hello.

I have read the article and saw the information about the relationship between SimGraphics and virtual YouTuber:

While the term "Virtual YouTuber" was coined in 2016, the technology of animating cartoon characters in real-time can be traced back to the 90s. In 1991, SimGraphics invented VActor, which was used to animate virtual characters in real-time. This technology was used to generate a real-time Mario avatar at the 1992 SCES.

I checked the sources given:

http://simg.com/AboutUs.html https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=R1t6iNG28zI

I became suspicious whether this information is relevant to the topic “virtual YouTuber.” Even though it is true that SimGraphics is early developer of the technology of animating cartoon characters in real-time, there is no source stating that the technology has relationship to the technology used in videos of virtual YouTuber. Also, SimGraphics developed it way before virtual YouTuber existed. These two facts can combine to show that the information about SimGraphics is trivial or not relevant to virtual YouTuber to be included in the article.

In addition, virtual YouTuber uses technology to entertain viewers in the media. I do not think SimGraphics’s development story should be here, because it is not clear whether it was for activity like what virtual YouTubers are doing now.

If you think my thought has critical error, please reply. Otherwise, either I delete the information, or you could delete it.

P.S. There were no sources given to show that the term “virtual YouTuber” was coined in 2016. Have I missed that bit of information in the sources?

Proposed Split of List of Virtual Youtubers

edit

I think that the section Virtual YouTubers#Notable Virtual YouTubers should become its own separate article called List of virtual Youtubers. The section is becoming long, unwieldy, and the list itself is hard to read. It is not related to core of the article, which is about explaining what Virtual YouTubers are -- not listing them. Furthermore, looking at other articles on Wikipedia this is the norm to do so. For example, List of YouTubers is a separate article from YouTuber. モハメッド一二三 (talk) 15:17, 3 April 2020 (UTC)Reply

@モハメッド一二三: The simplest solution is not to make a separate article for the list; it's purging the list of all of the non-notable ones. The title of the section is NOTABLE Virtual YouTubers, and is not meant to be a comprehensive list of every Vtuber ever created. The process will be quick and simple: get rid of all of the Vtubers that are not wikilinked. I will actually go ahead and do that now. If anyone wants to add back any particular ones that were removed, add it back with a wikilink or reference attached. Jackdude101 talk cont 17:18, 19 April 2020 (UTC)Reply
@Jackdude101: No general list on Wikipedia is meant to be a comprehensive list nor can it feasibly be comprehensible. They all contain people who are notable. For example, the List of YouTubers does not contain information on every single YouTuber. Neither does List of fatalities from aviation accidents contain every single aviation-related fatality nor does List of people killed in duels accomplish similar. You can notice that in two of those articles (excluding list of YouTubers due to its great size), most of the people have existing articles. As time goes on, more and more VYouTubers are going to have articles written about them and this list will become equally as unwieldy. モハメッド一二三 (talk) 18:45, 19 April 2020 (UTC)Reply
@モハメッド一二三: True, but there are still quite a few left on the list. This will also keep us from having to go through the trouble of creating a whole other article that would be potentially unreferenced (there are currently no citations in that section). Jackdude101 talk cont 19:03, 19 April 2020 (UTC)Reply
@Jackdude101: Alright, I do agree. It is simpler to leave it as it is for now. モハメッド一二三 (talk) 19:31, 19 April 2020 (UTC)Reply

Barbie

edit

Adding Barbie into the Notable Vtuber list overly broaden the definition too much I think. Barbie is more of an adjacent concept that is similar in to Vtuber but not being vtuber herself(?). Does she even count as youtuber in the first place?. Compare to say Suntory Nomu who represent Suntory.Feking83 (talk) 09:01, 13 July 2020 (UTC)Reply

I agree that Barbie shouldn't be in a list of Virtual YouTubers. She's mentioned in that BBC article a couple years back about VTubers as a precursor to Kizuna AI and VTubers, but not one of them. –♠Vami_IV†♠ 22:28, 13 July 2020 (UTC)Reply

First VTuber?

edit

This section lists Kizuna AI who started in "late 2016" as the first Vtuber. Red DaBEAR on Den of tools launched on August 6th, 2016. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mX6sNkCWqZQ Does anyone have the exact date of Kizuna's oldest video on that channel? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 2600:8801:97:8400:3055:8164:B1B6:69C1 (talk) 00:38, 11 March 2021 (UTC)Reply

To quote myself:

Animations with both body tracking and cartoon persona were used for Ninel' Pofig show (Нинель пофиг) before 2012.

Not sure if my example is going to be genuinely first, yet apparently there was a case of a VTuber in Runet well before 2016. 81.89.66.133 (talk) 10:33, 15 April 2024 (UTC)Reply

MiloTheActor

edit

I came across this channel, MiloTheActor, with the first video on June 30th, 2010. The character claimed to be the "first animated youtuber" in the world. Super Sonico precedes MiloTheActor by half a year, but it'd still make a good addition to the list of predecessors. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MdN-MT8Fi1A — Preceding unsigned comment added by 2A10:20C0:100:E006:E5D1:6FAC:83DC:F94C (talk) 12:15, 1 April 2021 (UTC)Reply

Went out of my way to find this channel before I realized that someone already posted this on the talk page. Personally, I'm not entirely sure if Milo fits the trend or not. ~Junedude433(talk) 22:52, 13 December 2021 (UTC)Reply

List of VTubers

edit

Should the article contain a list of VTubers, i.e., something along the lines of [1]? That list is apparently not eligible as a standalone list and was redirected to this article. But there is currently no list of VTubers in this article. I guess the list could be in a table format as in the linked revision of the redirect, perhaps with some additional column, for example to show if the VTuber is still active or not. Virtual YouTuberVTuberWP:COMMONNAME; reliable sources, and even the relevant communities, rarely use the term "virtual youtuber" in full. It is almost always the abbreviation "VTuber". ViperSnake151  Talk  00:25, 8 November 2021 (UTC)Reply

  • Certainly, as "virtual streamer" is covered by several factors of WP:CRITERIA. I dispute that "Vtuber" is the most common name, but regardless we don't always use the most common as we need to also be clear and descriptive. Both "Virtual YouTuber" and "Vtuber" as terms implies a tie to one specific platform, and so are particularly not WP:PRECISE. Twitch tags are not reliable, as many tags in use are abbreviations (like RPG or IRL) or other slang/terminology that do not match the titles of equivalent Wikipedia articles. -- Netoholic @ 03:43, 11 November 2021 (UTC)Reply
  • The problem with "virtual streamer" is that it ignore Vtuber who aren't streamer or at least not streaming focus. Kizuna Ai is the biggest example but there is also Hololive Azki (before the pandemic), as well as Vsinger group such as Vesperbell, Riot Music or Boogey Voxx. And the brand association is unavoidable because Youtube still the most popular platform for the movement. Feking83 (talk) 06:02, 12 November 2021 (UTC)Reply

Voice

edit

I have understood that the image is synthesized using Live2D or similar software, but I am not certain about the voice. There is mention of voice actors. Are there VTubers that are voiced synthetically, in a Vocaloid fashion? Which is more common/prefered? --Error (talk) 11:37, 4 January 2022 (UTC)Reply

The first real vtuber?

edit

I don’t think Kizuna AI is really the first vtuber cause the annoy orange is more like the first vtuber cause it follow the roles I’m pretty sure 2600:6C44:6800:E300:58A:D29:B881:165F (talk) 05:30, 21 February 2022 (UTC)Reply

Annoying Orange is more of an evolution of Syncro-Vox (i.e. Clutch Cargo). ViperSnake151  Talk  18:40, 3 October 2022 (UTC)Reply
Still, the question stands. Animations with both body tracking and cartoon persona were used for Ninel' Pofig show (Нинель пофиг) before 2012. 81.89.66.133 (talk) 10:31, 15 April 2024 (UTC)Reply

VTuber with the most subscriber count

Which VTuber has the most subscribers on the YouTube platform? TheMaggster (talk) 22:54, 16 July 2023 (UTC)Reply

@TheMaggsterIt's relatively hard to get good information. You will find several lists like this https://playboard.co/en/youtube-ranking/most-subscribed-v-tuber-channels-in-worldwide-total that omit major figures such as Nux Taku. I believe it is Gawr Gura though, but even then I'm a bit skeptical since sourcing is hard. Immanuelle ❤️💚💙 (talk to the cutest Wikipedian) 07:36, 17 July 2023 (UTC)Reply
