One must empathize with our colleague who chose this phrase: When you don't know anything that sounds worth saying, the temptation is to figuratively throw some gravel on top of the oatmeal if there are no nuts at hand: anything to break the boredom. If VP specifically took advantage of an old boy network, mention the good offices of the crucial link by name. If we can document how he knew it was more worth applying at the new place than somewhere else, say why. If he found it to be the best opening, or just knew that writers with resumes like his had shown the move from A to B was likely to be a good one, say it. But "moved over"'s suggestion of adjacent places can't be tolerated just bcz sounds more interesting.
After A closed, he worked at B. If there's more to say, say it, but don't equivocate with a vaguely fraught metaphor.
