"Varga" does not mean "shoemaker"
editIn Hungarian, the word "Varga" does NOT mean shoemaker. This is a popular misconception for English speakers that should be put to an end. The Hungarian words "cipész" or "cipő" mean shoemaker.
The pre-2017 Wikipedia entries on the name "Varga" were far more accurate in describing the name "Varga" as an ANTIQUATED term, not in contemporary use, to refer to a "leather worker" - someone who creates a variety of leather products:
The Hungarian word "varr" is a transitive verb from the proto-Finno-Ugric language group, meaning "to sew". So the old term "Varga", was an occupational surname that connoted one who stitched together leather to create a variety of leather goods, including saddles, purses, wallets, clothing, and yes hypothetically boots or shoes.
Furthermore, the name "Varga" originates from a village in Baranya county, Southern Hungary, which is historically famous for leather working.
It is a real shame someone with no knowledge of the Hungarian language, Hungarian culture, and Hungarian history, decided to re-define the name "Varga" to mean "shoemaker". Indeed, its pure folly. 66.203.185.4 (talk) 04:25, 9 May 2023 (UTC)
