An Intelligent car is a smart vehicle, and a smart vehicle, an Intelligent car.

proposed renaming

edit

this article spends much more time discussing the technology involved rather than the car itself. I propose that the article be renamed to "Vehicle Automation" and should make a passing mention that cars e, mploying this technology can be labeled "smart" or "intelligent".Owen214 (talk) 09:17, 11 October 2011 (UTC)Reply

well, since nobody seems to mind, I've moved it.Owen214 (talk) 10:13, 17 October 2011 (UTC)Reply
It shouldn't be capitalised. Minor issue and easily fixed, I'll move it. --Xaliqen (talk) 08:57, 19 June 2012 (UTC)Reply

Replacing drivers

edit

I've removed the comment that vehicle automation has "relieved the driver of a portion of the decision-making necessary while driving". It seems to be a symptom of the "robots replacing humans" mentality. Technologies such as ABS and traction control perform tasks that humans couldn't really do before, so it's misleading to say that it relieves the driver. No information about autonomous ships?

edit

Autonomous ships are now being developed by a few companies, but this article does not yet have any information about them: [1] Jarble (talk) 19:16, 30 August 2015 (UTC)Reply

Good point. Why don't you add the latest information? Tjej (talk) 07:49, 1 September 2017 (UTC)Reply

Passenger Shuttles, added. will warrant a separate page within the next twelve months?

edit

I've added this section and put in a lot of the current information. There doesn't seem to be any other suitable page for it to go but it seems unbalanced on this page. Given the development, testing, trials and deployments underway (there are three highly active vendors, one about to start a trial and the last with a prototype), I think topic will warrant a separate page within the next twelve months.07:49, 1 September 2017 (UTC)

Most of the information on the current manufacturers and trials would be better presented in a table. I will created this later. Tjej (talk) 06:22, 20 October 2017 (UTC)Reply

Examples of recent development

edit

Hi! I like the fact that autonomous vehicles are getting more wikipedia information, good job! However, i notice there is a lot missing from shared vehicles sections. "Following recent developments in autonomous cars, shared autonomous vehicles are now able to run in ordinary traffic without the need for embedded guidance markers" While this is probably very true, the term "recent developments" could easily be referenced to the actual developments in automation, whether it is tech or car firms working on their vehicles.

Automated functions variety confusion

edit

Refering to this introductory sentence:"Manufacturers and researchers subsequently added a variety of automated functions to automobiles and other vehicles". I personally think theres is a lot of confusion behind what functions the article talks about. It is hardware functions, like the ability to see and detect patterns on the road? Or is it more software based, like the ability for the car to distinguish between a car and a pedestrian? maybe even both? I feel this could be clarified, expanded further and given a proper historical reference.

Proposal: new section on semi-autonomous vs autonomous vehicles

edit

Throughout the article there is constant talk about semi-autonomous features that have become autonomous or placed as historical context. A good distinction with examples and references of these terms could be expanded from the introduction into its own section (preferably at the start of the article). It would make the entire thing more readable and understandable.

Since there seems to much more development with Agricultural and Construction vehicles has anybody considered linking this with the driver less tractor article page? https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Driverless_tractor DJH16W (talk) 16:43, 4 February 2019 (UTC)Reply

Agricultural automation might be of interest, but there is a difference between vehicle automation for public roads which requires some kind of safety, and other activities which are not on the same public road and which might not require the exact same features. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 77.193.104.81 (talk) 20:06, 16 August 2020 (UTC)Reply

Proposal: Rename Overview section

edit

Currently, the Overview section talks only about the autonomous driving system. Since the article is about vehicle automation, it would be better to rename the section to "Technology used in automated vehicles" or "Automated driving system". Tiffany Ong (talk) 21:00, 30 July 2020 (UTC)Reply

Missing history section

edit

It looks like an historic section is missing.

It could name each features which has been standardized, regulated and deployed in the motorized vehicles, for instance some vehicles, car truck or bus might have:

  • ESC
  • ABS
  • AEB
  • ACC
  • Air bag
  • Windscreen_wiper#Rain-sensing_wipers
  • Automated lane keeping systems

The benefits of the historic section is it naturally gives an ordered view on past (so existing) facts. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 77.193.104.81 (talk) 20:16, 16 August 2020 (UTC)Reply

Delete table of autonomous shuttle trials? replace with list of manufacturers?

edit

The table of autonomous shuttle trials under Vehicular_automation#Trials is completely out of date. There are now 100s of trials so it is not a good indication. I think the table should be replace with a list of manufactures, country of origin and, if the information can be found, an indication of the number of trials they have or are conducting, Tjej (talk) 13:35, 10 June 2021 (UTC)Reply

Also the section needs to reflect that there have been "shared autonomous vehicles" in service on private grounds or exclusive right of way for some time. The section opens with discussion of vehicles running in shared traffic but a large number (most?) of the trials have not be on ordinary roads.
I have been doing some other edits with the latest developments (Cruise Origin, Zoox). Once I have finished that I will look at reworking the section along these lines, unless someone has better ideas. Tjej (talk) 12:50, 21 June 2021 (UTC)Reply

Motor vehicles vs Aircraft, watercraft, submersible, assistance robots

edit

Vehicular automation deals with motor vehicles (including cars and trucks) but also with aircrafts, watercrafts, submersibles, assistance robots, trains and subways. All those systems do not share the same technologies, rules and regulations. Motor vehicles have specific ones. At the opposite, self-driving car and self-driving truck may share same kind of technologies and issues.

To avoid confusion, article may be better split between motor vehicle automation for road traffic in one hand, and a more generic transportation automation for other modes on the other hand. By analogy, NHTSA is specialized in highway while NTSB covers various kind of transports. This split could be defined like:

motor vehicle driving automation
systems that perform part or all of the dynamic driving task (DDT) on a sustained basis — SAE https://www.sae.org/standards/content/j3016_202104/ ;
automated road transport: one of the major key technology influencing and shaping the future mobility — ESA
transportation automation
Automation has been applied in various ways in the transportation industries. Applications include (...) automatic pilots in aircraft and locomotives, and urban mass-transit systems. — Britannica https://www.britannica.com/technology/automation/Transportation
