Contradictions in "Health Claims" section?

The Health Claims section reads very anti-smoking. And perhaps it should. Smoking isn't good for you. But the following statements seem to have some internal consistency/logic problems (paraphrased):

1. The smoking machine doesn't accurately measure smoking and/or is fooled by the evil tobacco companies.
2. Smokers get just as much nicotine and tar and bad stuff from "light" cigarettes as they do from regulars.
3. Smokers compensate for the lesser amount of bad stuff by smoking more and more heavily.

Wait, what? If it's all determined by addiction and cravings and the need to compensate, then each individual cigarette actually does give less of the bad stuff? Or sometimes yes, sometimes no? Pär Larsson (talk) 17:08, 24 February 2011 (UTC)

@Parjlarsson: Almost. For "and/or", read "because it". The holes in the filter dilute the smoke, but they also make it easier to inhale through the cigarette (like breathing through an open straw instead of one that's nearly pinched shut). Smokers usually compensate for an easier draw by puffing harder and inhaling more (the machines don't). So smokers inhale pretty much the same amount of smoke, but mixed with more air. Unsurprisingly this is ~just as bad for their health. Smokers may differ in the way they compensate; one blocks the holes, another puffs harder, a third smokes more cigarettes. Or some mixture. Is there a discussion of the validity of the FTC Smoking machine test?

"In addition to heavily promoting the filtered cigarette as the answer to smokers’ health concerns, the industry also poured resources into developing a cigarette that would produce lower machine-measured tar and nicotine yields when tested by the Federal Trade Commission (FTC).[3] This endeavor resulted in the introduction and heavy promotion of light cigarettes during the 1970s.[5] The newly-designed light cigarette employed a special filter perforated with small holes; these perforated filters allegedly offset the concentration of inhaled harmful smoke with clean air. Should this information be included in this page?

Cancer.gov: Question: Are machine-measured tar yields misleading? Answer: Yes. The ratings cannot be used to predict how much tar a smoker will actually get because the way the machine smokes a cigarette is not the way a person smokes a cigarette. A rating of 7 milligrams does not mean that you will get only 7 milligrams of tar. You can get just as much tar from a light cigarette as from a full-flavor cigarette. It all depends on how you smoke. Taking deeper, longer, and more frequent puffs will lead to greater tar exposure. Also, a smoker’s lips or fingers may block the air ventilation holes in the filter, leading to greater tar exposure (7). --66.65.167.82 (talk) 05:08, 5 September 2012 (UTC)

This is English Wikipedia not US Wikipedia

This article reads like it was written solely for a US audience and by a person who has no knowledge of anywhere outside of his/her country. Phrases like In June 2009, the Senate passed anti-smoking legislation are appalling. What Senate are you referring to? I know of at least 20 countries of the top of my head which have a legislative body called the Senate. This pattern of articles which fail to mention the rest of the world (some even lead with a US section then go on to talk about "Other Countries" which is even worse. Possible expansion of this article

At Wikipedia:Redirects for discussion/Log/2018 June 9#Full flavored cigarettes it has been suggested that this article might be expanded slightly to cover other types of cigarettes with which lights are/were contrasted.
