I would be interested to know the strength of evicence for the venus throw being the highest rank: I know it's often said, but on what historical basis? My understanding was (from a scholarly article I read, but cannot reference) that while the names of several throws is known, including the highest and the lowest, the rank of the venus throw was not known: by inference it was probably fairly good, but it wasn't the best. The same article spent some time refuting suggestions that the composition of the named throws was known, except in the case of the venus throw, which is the only one in which the specific combination was known from historical sources. So, if the article I read was correct, then the reference cited here - the Dictionary of Greek and Roman Antiquities - must be incorrect on two points. David J.
