Article name
editIt looks like the media calls this company "Vernier", so I propose it be renamed "Vernier" or "Vernier Software" per WP:NCCN. The company logo just says "Vernier", which supports this theory. Thoughts? tedder (talk) 01:04, 11 June 2010 (UTC)
- I agree. They are the first several results from a search engine. --Niehusa (talk) 03:11, 11 June 2010 (UTC)
Revision suggestions
editI am unsure what some of your comments are in reference to Tedder, maybe you or some other can explain it to me. I will work on making the sections flow more smoothly, but suggestions would be appreciated.--Niehusa (talk) 20:04, 23 June 2010 (UTC)
- What's the context here? tedder (talk) 22:49, 23 June 2010 (UTC)
- I am unclear what all of your comments mean, I am afraid I do not understand your shorthand. "(ce lede, try to resection (I'm not happy with "company" and the section ordering), rm data collections para: slightly too advert-ish, and doesn't belong on this page (will expand rationale on talk page if requested))."
- I will work on reordering things so they make more sense, and I would like some more explanation on the removal of the data collection paragraph. I had intended it to reflect the business partnerships of the company, not to be an advert. In comparison to many other articles I have read (ex. Norton AntiVirus, Symantec or the featured article "Idlewild and Soak Zone") I did not think that it was advert-ish. I listing of all or the most popular products would be inappropriate, but I have seen it done on other pages (again, Norton AntiVirus, another featured article "Oliver Typewriter Company.") My intent was to be more in line with the Products section of the BAE Systems page. I am sure that significant work must be done to bring this article to the proper state, but I am more than willing to make it so. Your help is greatly appreciated.--Niehusa (talk) 04:15, 24 June 2010 (UTC)
Hi Niehusa. I'll break down the shorthand:
- ce: copyedit. (general cleanup)
- lede: the lede or lead of the article- all text above the table of contents or first section.
- try to resection: I added the "==Company==" section, but I'm not thrilled with the name of it or the location it occurs in the article. But it's better than nothing, and will hopefully be improved.
- data collections: I'm talking about the paragraph starting "The use of data-collection technologies". Here's the thing: it doesn't support an article about Vernier. In other words, it certainly helps sell Vernier products, but it doesn't inform the reader about who Vernier is. It might belong on a general article about [[Data collection in student laboratories]] or something similar.
So I'm not talking about the rest of the article being an advert, just that specific paragraph/justification of Vernier technology. Thanks, tedder (talk) 04:33, 24 June 2010 (UTC)
- I apologize for my misunderstanding. I believed you were referencing the "Current Products" section, and was unclear of your reasons for that. My thinking about the data collections paragraph was an attempt to show the worthiness of the page's existence with statistical backing for why the company's products are important tools for education, much the same as a language program would reference the increased language retention of its users. I agree that this may be better suited for another, more general page, but as none exists at this moment I would like to find some way to include it.--Niehusa (talk) 05:41, 24 June 2010 (UTC)
- I do agree that it's useful information. I can't figure out how to include it- do you have any ideas? tedder (talk) 05:45, 24 June 2010 (UTC)
- I am sure that I can think of something. I am thinking of linking it to the info about President Obama, as one of the topics he was reported to have discussed during his visit was centered around this idea. --Niehusa (talk) 06:29, 24 June 2010 (UTC)
