"Largest concentration"
editAccording to statistics from the 2000 census, the Bay Area had almost 100,000 fewer Vietnamese American residents than the OC/LA metro area. DHN (talk) 19:00, 24 June 2018 (UTC)
- The cited source was this NYT article. Given the wording, they may've been looking at the 1990 Census's language usage statistics rather than their ethnicity statistics. I agree that an increase of a hundred thousand from 1990 to 2000 would be quite unexpected. It could also be that the article was inaccurate, so we could reword it to say "one of the top" instead. – Minh Nguyễn 💬 01:06, 25 June 2018 (UTC)
I'm not sure where the NYT article got the 200,000 figure from – it bears no relation to any of the 1990 Census figures I can find (below). Maybe it came from the Knight Ridder market study that the article describes, but if that's the case, then that only raises more questions. As with the NYT article, the Viet Mercury article includes these statistics as background for why the Knight Ridder would launch a free local newspaper in Vietnamese. The article can certainly make that point without this seemingly flawed statistic.
