Value of Coins
Personally, I find this an OK article, but what is the value of 1 Vietnamese cash coin? Tien? Dong? Not the exchange rate, but the value in relation to the currency. SmartOne
- That's a good question. I think the reason why you don't find an unambiguous answer is that in regular circulation in pre-modern Vietnam, you would find the basic cash coin only. So, there wasn't really a need for a denomination - unlike, say, the U.S. dollar, where you've got several denominations, from 1 cent to 1 dollar. So, in Vietnam, a cash coin is a cash coin - and if you had 100, then you had 100 cash coins. Alfons Åberg (talk) 16:01, 30 November 2010 (UTC)
- About that, I see the name "Lang," "Van," "Tien," "Quan," and "Phan," where Lang are sometimes rectangular (KM#659), Van are kind of cash (KM#389), Tien in gold (KM#321), Quan also rectangular (KM#511), and Phan cash-like coins (KM#626).
- Do you know any information about the value of these coins? (SmartOne)
- Generally as a division of the French Indo-Chinese Piastre these coins were divided for example 500 Van was 1 Piastre, but the zinc Tonkinese variant was worth 1/200th of 1 Piastre. I hope this helps. ;-)

Maybe it would be wise to introduce the colonial (western) name next to the VietNamese one.--95.33.195.46 (talk) 19:41, 8 October 2011 (UTC)
Value of standard imperial coins during French rule
What was the value of the normal Thanh Thai Thong Bao or other Thong Bao van coins during the Piastre-era 1/500 or 1/600?--95.33.195.46 (talk) 19:49, 8 October 2011 (UTC)
- Under the Thanh Thai Emperor 500 Văn were equal to 1 Piastre, or 5 Văn were 1 cent.

VietContent. Vietnamese Charms.
I found a lot of information on Vietnamese charms that are shaped like Vietnamese cash and read the same inscriptions, should that be in the article or can this only be about the official currency. --1.55.196.75 (talk) 06:56, 15 June 2017 (UTC)

The list above is in no way complete, there are numerous of “unidentified” coins that I had deliberately left out (I might made a separate list for those), but more importantly I still use Edouard Toda’s “Annam and its Minor Currency” (hosted by Sema/@Pyvanet:.) from 1882 rather than Barter’s more updated book 📚 from 2004. This is because unlike the books from Davidhartill which I can easily pirate online 😈 , I can't seem to find a way to do that with Barter’s (it’s not my first choice to “pirate” those books, I live in Hanoi and have no other way to acquire them as they’re not sold here and online I have to pay double and I’m poor), if someone owns Barter’s book then please fill in some missing information.

Now let me explain some style choices, the reason I chose to include rebellious coinage is because official sources list them and by only including coins from “officially recognised” authorities we’d be re-writing history for the sake of “only the victors matter” which violates the WP:NPOV as “the official history” isn't the same as “the real history” so I included rebel coinage. I found some unreferenced sentences on Wikipedia that claimed that the production of the Bảo Đại Thông Bảo(保大通寶) stopped in 1933, but all the sources I could find point out 1945, if someone changes the casting date then please reference this. Also despite there being a plethora of 景興 (Cảnh Hưng) coins, the list is still incomplete and someone with a reference book that lists all of them should please fill “the missing coins” in.
The repetition of the same inscriptions isn't an accident either, some inscriptions were simply “recast” in later era‘s.
I hope others will help complete it in the future. 😉
Fixing minor mistakes. 🛠
I noticed that I've made a lot of minor mistakes, usually I'm quick to fix those but as the international internet cable to Vietnam is broken (something it does 10 times a year) I can't seem to save or even do my edits (I have to write everything in an e-mail 📧 first before I can apply anything), maybe someone else could fix some spacing errors (especially in the dates). 📅

I took the above list again from Edouard Toda’s book, and I’m unaware which coins have and haven’t been identified since 1882 so if someone has a source that can place them in “the above table” then please do so and add that book 📚 /website 🌐 to the section “sources” below.

Missing "McDynasty" 😜 coins. 🔎💴
I found a website that goes into great details about Mac dynasty coinage, as I won’t have any internet soon I can’t add these coins, if someone else would be so kind to add them to the list I'd be eternally grateful. m(_ _)m 🙇🏻

I'll try to add more "Barker coins" to the list, but I can only judge by names and reign titles. If someone has the book 📚 then please correct me if I'm wrong 👎🏻. --58.187.173.13 (talk) 15:18, 23 June 2017 (UTC)
why WP:NOTCATALOG doesn't apply to the coin lists. 😰🏮📜💴💰🏷
The reason why the list of coins DON’T fall under WP:NOTCATALOG is because while the argument can be made that these/those lists can be seen as “a shopping guide for numismatists” don’t they include rarity indexes or price indexes, they do however show dynastic attribution and by/under whom they were minted, if anyone would care to delete the lists by the pretendse of “WP:NOTCATALOG” remember that the list serves the history of the coinage, not just a guide for collectors, also as of June 25th, 2017 both lists are still incomplete so it’s not exclusively a shopping 🏬 guide for coin collectors, I think that people with an interest in history will find them useful too. Also don’t delete the entire list(s) if one or two entries are wrong 👎🏻, just correct them, don’t go overboard. 😒

Why the Japanese export coins should be in there. 🗾💴💸➡🌏
The reason those Japanese coins are in the list is because they were minted specifically for circulation abroad (in the territory of Quang Nam/Cochinchina), and the list’s eader says “coins produced to circulate within Vietnam” which those coins fully qualify as.

Conflicting sources
For some reason the sources concerning the discontinuation of the currency tend to contradict each other blaming either independence or the Japanese occupation as the reason, I will attempt to clarify this more in the article on the Bảo Đại Thông Bảo but if anyone knows some good sources please list them here. --Donald Trung (talk) 03:30, 14 March 2018 (UTC)
P.S. (Post-Script) The Archive bot didn't seem to be working so I archived them with the OneClickArchiver as I didn't want this message to be burries underneath loads of already solved discussions as I've provided all information in the body of the article and I've had my time to work out the issues with the list, although there's always room for improvement. 😉 Also note that the list has significantly changed so using prior information for the current list might be a bit misleading. --Donald Trung (talk) 03:32, 14 March 2018 (UTC)
