Regarding Oracle and AUTOMATIC persistent virtual columns:
Oracle_database does not have support for persistent virtual columns.
Oracle_Rdb does have support for persistent virtual columns, known as AUTOMATIC columns.
Oracle Rdb is a separate product from Oracle database, originally developed by DEC for VMS and later on bought by Oracle. Previous versions of this page said that Oracle had persistent virtual columns known as AUTOMATIC columns, but that doesn't appear to be the case - it looks like there was some confusion between Oracle Rdb and Oracle database.
- Oracle documentation on CREATE TABLE statement makes no mention of AUTOMATIC columns or persistent virtual columns [1]
- Oracle Rdb documentation specifically about the AUTOMATIC column feature gives a quick explanation on how they work and how they are different from computed columns [2]
- General Rdb documentation explains usage of the feature in context [3] See page "7–70" i.e. page 82.
