Requested move 2006
edit- The following discussion is an archived debate of the proposal. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made in a new section on the talk page. No further edits should be made to this section.
The result of the debate was Not moved: Wikipedia is not a crystal ball. It could at some point warrant moving, but after it has been released under this name (it could change), and after it has approached being as common as this current meaning. —Centrx→talk • 05:17, 25 August 2006 (UTC)
Virtual console → Virtual console (computer user-interface) – With Nintendo's upcoming system Wii the term Virtual Console is starting to associated that term with Wii since it will have a download service with that name. Virtual Console should be a disambiuation page with links to both articles. TJ Spyke 02:43, 15 August 2006 (UTC)
Survey
edit- Oppose: common nouns such as Virtual console shouldn't be moved because of new product names - the disambiguation at top is enough TuukkaH 12:47, 16 August 2006 (UTC)
- Support The term "Virtual Console" will become just as associated with(if not more so than) with the Wii. Edgecution 07:55, 21 August 2006 (UTC)

renaming this page
editWhy does searching for Virtual Console not go to the Wii's virtual console page anymore? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 69.134.78.151 (talk) 06:15, 26 March 2008 (UTC)
I'm pretty sure that more people search for the Wii Virtual Console, myself included and end up clicking on the redirect page, especially considering the amount of sales the Wii is having, and searching for the Linux related term would only appeal to a tiny portion of people searching the term. It would be far more logical to have a search for 'virtual console' go to the Wii page and the disambiguation link to be on the top of that page rather than the way it currently is, and for this page to be renamed 'Virtual Console (PC)' or 'Linux Virtual Console' - Neal 80.7.73.24 (talk) 14:52, 6 December 2007 (UTC)
- I'm not opposed to moving the original article to Virtual console (PC), but I do question if this redirect should be to Virtual Console. I'm not sure that either topic is signifigantly more notable than the other. (Personally, I came to this link expecting to see the PC article and even as a Wii owner, I completely forgot there system was called "Virtual Console"...kinda crummy generic name for it, huh? oh well) I'll have to refresh my guideline knowledge, but perhaps this should become a disambiguation page...I'll come back to this later. -Verdatum (talk) 22:23, 24 January 2008 (UTC)
Why is windows terminal included in the virtual console page? I would assume that anything that could be run in a gui environment would be a terminal emulator, and not a canonical virtual terminal... That was the distinction between the two that I always understood. You wouldnt be able to run the windows one with a graphics driver, but similar distinction with X drivers vs linux-kernel services isn't as clear to me for windows systems. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 173.23.137.233 (talk) 22:01, 8 September 2011 (UTC)

Virtual console → Virtual console (computer user-interface) – I feel as though it is time to revisit this move request that was made about 9 years ago. Given that the term "Virtual Console", capitalized or uncapitalized, has so much significance to the Nintendo brand, being present on at least 3 platforms now (Wii, Wii U, and Nintendo 3DS), the lowercase version of the word should be linked to Virtual Console by redirecting there. Steel1943 (talk) 20:41, 21 April 2015 (UTC)
- Oppose virtual consoles have existed for much longer than Nintendo's has, and over a much larger and more varied variety of platforms, not restricted to a single OS or manufacturer -- 65.94.43.89 (talk) 06:03, 22 April 2015 (UTC)
- Whether or not that can be verified, I don't believe that different capitalization is enough to disambiguate one from the other. Both variations should either point to the same article or a disambiguation page if both topics really are that notable. Steel1943 (talk) 06:14, 22 April 2015 (UTC)
- Then move the Nintendo article. This stays here. The Nintendo topic is arguably an application of the concept detailed here. -- 65.94.43.89 (talk) 04:06, 23 April 2015 (UTC)

Merge with Terminal emulator
editIs it really a different concept from the terminal emulator? The interface section should probably be moved to a Terminal emulator as it basically describes the same thing: a piece of software used to emulate computer terminal. As a matter of fact, the /dev/ttyN
files are described as "virtual consoles" in the Linux Kernel docs.[1], which are basically part of the terminal emulator. Are we safe to merge both article and elaborate on differences? Any thoughts? I propose to do so. Would love to hear objections. AXONOV (talk) ⚑ 12:49, 4 October 2021 (UTC)
- They're related, but not the same thing. Keeping this down to "Wikipedia level", a virtual console is generally perceived to be part of the "computer", while a terminal emulator is an add-on (not really part of the computer). Of course, for readers who think that the computer is Firefox, that explanation doesn't help much. TEDickey (talk) 19:25, 4 October 2021 (UTC)
- @Tedickey: Hi. I've moved[20:34, October 4, 2021] the Interface subsection to the Terminal emulator already as the stuff described are basically pseudo devices; not sure whether it's relevant here but the
/dev/console
historically was a symlink.[2] I propose to make a section on clarifying the differences. If someone wants to have whole section I propose to use {{excerpt}} to temporarily include Terminal emulator subsection. Best. AXONOV (talk) ⚑ 20:49, 4 October 2021 (UTC)
