Talk:Virtuality (disambiguation)

Primary topic

edit

Seems clear that the noun-form title ("Virtuality") is the mandated title for the existing page covering the concept that the adjective describes. It may not be obvious that that is the primary topic, but i'm inclined to think so, and it can be renamed to Virtuality (concept) if i'm mistaken.

Virtual is an adjective

edit

English includes a grammatical construction where an adjective follows a quasi-adjective (usually "the" as in "The Dead", but also "your" as in "Bring out yer dead.", and probably others). The resulting two-word phrase functions like a noun would -- tho seldom does either word appear in dictionaries as a noun. An editor of the accompanying article may have chosen "Virtual" as title by analogy with Moon (about the moon) or Seine (about the Seine), but that is a mistaken analogy: "moon" or "Moon, and "Seine", are nouns; contrarywise, "virtual", in the (noun) phrase "the virtual" that appears several times in the article, is an adjective. Thinking of the article as being appropriately titled "Virtual" is probably the result of failure to analyze the noun phrase in the fashion i have above; The virtual and Virtuality are reasonable titles for the article (barring another topic that would be the primary topic for the one in question), but "Virtual" is not, and thus neither is Virtual (philosophy).
"Virtual" would have the album Virtual as, at least, one topic contending for it as title. (The fact that we cover the album only by a section of our article Animal X (band), and not by its own article, may or not weaken its claim.) Since we default to equal disambiguation in the absence of clear evidence of a primary topic, i'm making Virtual a Dab page, listing the album (and anticipating future books and cars and ships and software products named "Virtual" -- see the treatment of Valiant -- joining it) above "See also", with the articles that are not legitimate contenders for it appearing below "See also". Others may wish to discuss the possibility that the section or a future page on the album is primary topic, but i am unlikely to participate in that decision.
Virtual (disambiguation) should also list Virtuality (disambiguation) -- IMO under the "See also" heading -- and The virtual seems like a constructive Rdr to the philosophy article (at least until such time as that title needs disambiguation). (I don't see Virtuality (computing) -- what i'll rename Virtual (computing) to -- as a contender for "The visual", but if YMMV i won't object to disambiguation.)
