This is the talk page for discussing improvements to the Vladimir Horowitz article. This is not a forum for general discussion of the article's subject.
Dears, Soviet Union was established in 1922. He was born in 1903 in Kiev. It was a city in the Russian Empire. And there wasn’t such state as Ukraine in that time. So he can’t be decribed either a Soviet or as a Ukrainian musician. 90.154.70.200 (talk) 19:47, 2 January 2024 (UTC)Reply
People , born in Kiev and other cities of current Ukraine, at that time were not called Russians, they were called Ukrainians. Correct your mistake, he was not Russian, he was Ukrainian. 82.18.57.133 (talk) 21:31, 11 April 2024 (UTC)Reply
Hello, let me put my 2 cents. Horowitz was born in the Kiev Governorate, which was part of the Russian Empire but was not Russia but was considered part of Malorossiya, which was a term used to russify Ukraine. Ukraine was not a Nation at that time but was considered as a nationality and it's documented in documents way earlier. Still, in Kiev Governorate they mostly spoke "little Russian" language, which is Ukrainian, and they were defined as Ukrainian. If that's not enough, Horowitz was still alive when Ukrainian Soviet Social Republic was formed and it was Ukraine, not Russia, as part of Soviet Union.
By the way, to make a comparison, as I'm Italian, many Italian people was born in parts of Italy which were under Holy Roman Empire or Austrian Empire or French Empire, and they are all considered Italians. Maybe because Austrians, Germans or French don't have the same will of Russians to be considered "great" with the culture stolen from territories they occupied?
If this behavior was considered "innocent" in the past, nowadays it shows itself for what it really is: the will to remove another culture and dominate it. Max Pilloni (talk) 08:24, 19 April 2024 (UTC)Reply
Good point. It is surely misleading to label him Russian with sources from 1989. Groves Dictionary refers to him as American pianist of Ukrainian birth, this could be a good solution. ShelbyNan98 (talk) 21:43, 19 April 2024 (UTC)Reply

Legacy is important and must be mentioned in the article in addition to awards and recognition. As a recording artist Vladimir Horowitz made a good number of important recordings of classical music. His legacy is one of the most significant collections of works for piano. His playing when he was at his best form remains exemplary in every aspect of musicianship, technical virtuosity, range of expressiveness and artistic finesse. He is the one among pianists (if not the only one) who has a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. Steveshelokhonov had recently cleaned and photographed the star for Vladimir Horowitz to better illustrate the article about this great artist.
