Question
editShould we rename the second one, which currently is titled "Voluntarism (philosophy)," so that it reads "Voluntarism (metaphysics)"? I ask only because voluntaryism is also technically a philosophy, albeit a political one. What do y'all think? Allixpeeke (talk) 00:24, 18 December 2007 (UTC)
- I find such a change appropiate. Lord Metroid (talk) 22:24, 18 December 2007 (UTC)
Making This Disambiguation More Accurate
editI just created the article Voluntarism (concept) and wrote on the talk page:
Shouldn't this be called "Voluntarism (politics)
1. The political disambiguation voluntarism used to point to Voluntaryism until I pointed out that there was a separate definition that was not ideological and that voluntarism needed own article. Then I had to write it!
2. However, someone else created the "Voluntarism (concept)" despite my pointing out that the definition and use is technically political for a number of reasons can expand on here if necessary. (Or read the article.) I believe they want to keep politics only as a description of Voluntaryism which is a political philosophy or ideology, but NOT the only one that promotes voluntarism.
3. If editors who are neutral on the voluntaryism concept agree, we can change to "Voluntarism (politics)" here and in the disambiguation.
I therefore propose this disambiguation read thusly:
Voluntarism can refer to:
- Voluntarism (philosophy), philosophical term emphasising the primacy of the will.
- Voluntarism (politics), the use of or reliance on voluntary action to maintain an institution, carry out a policy, or achieve an end.
See also
- Volunteerism, the willingness of people to work on behalf of others without the expectation of pay or other tangible gain.
- Voluntaryism, a philosophical belief that the only legitimate interactions between and among people are done on a freely chosen basis through voluntary association and agreement.

I can't help but to wonder, if it is changed as you suggest, that we wouldn't be blurring the line between voluntarism and voluntaryism. I further am not even positive that the difference is so great that it does not simply amount to some people A) prefering to spell it how Auberon Herbert spelled it, and other people B) thinking the 'y' looks bad. It there a manifest difference between voluntarism and voluntaryism other than the additional letter in the latter?
I guess what my question comes down to is this: does voluntarism not hold that coercion should be avoided in favour of voluntary action? And if it be the case that voluntarism does not hold that, then how can we describe voluntarism as "political" when all it is is a tendency of method at achieving things? If it does hold that coercion should be avoided in favour of voluntary action, how is it any different from voluntaryism?
Sincerely,

- As you can see I changed it from "concept" to "action" which is part of the definition and moots the "politics" debate. Also, it is clear that voluntarism might include a preference for voluntary action but voluntarYism is an ideology that says that ONLY voluntary action is legitimate, and that is a big difference.
- If there is any confusion with the three words being together in Voluntarism can refer to: we can move voluntarYism to See also since technically it IS a subset of voluntarism and still NOT a common dictionary meaning of the word voluntarism, as are action and metaphysics (or more commonly philosophy).

Merge into Volunteer (disambiguation) ?
editThe Volunteering article was created historically from Volunteerism, which is a rare word in UK English. It looks 'dead naff' to have

at the top ! I've cross-linked stuff, but I'll leave it to the philosophers, semanticists and metaphysicians to volunteer to merge these ... --195.137.93.171 (talk) 17:53, 1 November 2010 (UTC)
