Etymology of the surname most certainly wrong

edit

The etymology of the surname 'Vonnegut' given in this article is in all likelihood incorrect. Prepositions are very rarely followed by only an adjective in German, (or, indeed, in English) so it is much more likely that the 'gut' in Vonnegut derives from the noun 'Gut' meaning 'estate' or 'property'. Quite in general, one should be extremely prudent when it comes to trusting websites in English explaining the meaning of non-English family names. 92.34.146.60 (talk) 16:34, 22 September 2023 (UTC)Reply

The correct (or at least much more plausible) etymology is given in the last paragraph of Clemens Vonnegut. Toponymic surnames along with occupational surnames are very common in Germany. -- 2003:E5:172C:189C:B42B:C71D:692B:BCA1 (talk) 18:58, 7 June 2024 (UTC)Reply
