Since the question of whether the Category "American slave owners" applies to W.H.F. Lee has come up, I checked for reliable sources to settle the issue. This is a tough one, since there don't seem to be a lot of sources that mention it directly. However, I did find this one, which explicitly refers to "Rooney Lee's slaves." In the 1860 census, Rooney Lee is shown as owning a very large, valuable estate, but I can't access the 1860 slave schedule to get a count on how many slaves he may have had.
