WTVX Returns to the air

WVTX has resumed operation of its over the air transmissions on channel 28 as of September 23rd, 2006. The station is once again under the direct control of Turnpike Television. Bryan27 01:05, 24 September 2006 (UTC)

WVTX Off Air & Leaves Cable

On September 15th, 2006 WVTX ceased its over the air broadcast on channel 28. On September 22nd, 2006 the station will leave cable systems. The station is slated to be replaced by WTRF-DT2 which is a digital subchannel of WTRF and is affiliated with the FOX network.Bryan27 22:06, 19 September 2006 (UTC)

So which will be carried on Comcast channel 3 in the Wheeling area, the repeated broadcast of WBGN, or the subchannel of WTRF? Given that Comcast already carries WPGH on channel 12, would that be replaced, or would there then be 2 FOX affiliates (much like there are now two affiliates for each of CBS, NBC, and PBS)? That is a good question. It is highly unlikely that the retransmission of WBGN will be on cable channel 3. Channel 28 aired a retransmission of WBGN for years and was never added to cable. WBGN is carried on a number of cable systems, but has always had difficulty getting on Comcast's systems.

The WTRF-Fox isn't much of a station. It a retransmission of WTRF-CBS then switches to a Fox feed durning primetime. WPGH can't be replaced on cable as it is considered "significantly viewed" and is a must carry station. The status of significantly viewed is determined by the viewing habits of households without cable. Currently cable is not required to carry digital subchannels though they sometimes do, as is the case with NBC Weather Plus. There is also a problem with WTRF's digital signal. They transmit at a very small power and isn't easily receivable farther than 7 miles from the tower. The cable system in New Martinsville agreed to carry WTRF-Fox, but later droped those plans when the cable system couldn't receive WTRF's digital signal.

It is notable that those with set top digital boxes and roof top antennas can view the digital subchannels such as NBC Weather Plus and WTRF-Fox for free.

WVTX Independent

It has been confirmed through the listing services of TV Guide and Tribune Media Services that WVTX will be independent as of Monday, September 18th, 2006 (the official date of the start of the CW fall line up). The CW will be on WBWO cable 18 which was formerly the WB "affiliate" on Comcast. What programming will be on WVTX during the prime-time hours is not known at this time and will be announced later. CW Affiliation

Is the future CW affiliation a fact or just hearsay? The "commercials" for CW I have seen aren't "local," but rather feeds from UPN that weren't covered up by WVTX. The CW website also doesn't list WVTX as an affiliate. I am removing the CW affiliation reference since it has not been published that the station will infact be a CW affiliate.

I have reason to believe that it wasn't a UPN feed, because the show in which I saw it on at the time, WWE Friday Night SmackDown!, had sound troubles from the national feed (the actual show and the national commercials), while the local commercials (I.E. whatever the local stations decide to show during that particular break) did NOT have such a sound problem (the sound problem was very obvious of having. I had to turn the volume down while watching SmackDown that night). The CW commercial was one of those commercials with no problems. Thus, I can safely confirm that 1) it wasn't a UPN feed, but rather a commercial that WVTX decided to add onto it's local commercial breaks, and 2) something that WVTX decided to NOT cover up for some reason. Also the CW site has not been updated in some time (and I have tried to get an anwser from them about this, there is no answer whatsoever from this). Here is the information I have. WBWO cable 18 is owned directly by the WB network. Prior to the launch of WVTX, Emcor Media, owned by Ted Rouse, was the local advertising agent for WBWO cable 18. With WB+UPN->CW the big question is whether CW will be on the cable channel 18 or on WVTX. In all of the few cases I have heard of where WB or UPN directly own one of the affiliates in a market, CW will become affiliated with that station. I've heard (but not confirmed) that this also applies to the many cable only channels WB operated (I don't know if UPN did such things). So it would seem WVTX will not be a CW affiliate. But I have heard of affiliation changes happening on the last day, so you never know.

This page needs to rewrite to clear out a lot of unconfirmed and possibly erroneous information. Skapare 18:59, 14 August 2006 (UTC)

Bob Fitzsimmons to buy WVTX?

I found it more appropriate to say this in a discussion thread than in the actual entry, but there are some sources that claim now that Bob Fitzsimmons, the guy that runs RCK-1 (that owns WKKX) is interested in buying WVTX.
