Scott Nearing controversy
editI came to this page looking for information about Wallace Atwood's work in Geology and was struck by what seems to me a tendentious political view.
The comment that President Atwood's banning the speech of a Socialist on campus "won him great renown" is hardly objective. His conduct was undoubtedly approved by many conservatives in this Red Scare era, but criticized by many liberals, including, for example, editors of the New York Evening Post, who spoke of "drastic censorship", and Bruce Bliven, writing in the NEW REPUBLIC, who pointed out that it generated a large-scale student protest. Atwood's follow-up in banning a left-wing magazine from the college supports a conclusion that the Nearing affair, in which Atwood clearly blew his top, was not just the isolated action of an angry man. (Incidentally, it's interesting to note that Anthropologist Franz Boas left his teaching position at Clark in a academic freedom dispute with Atwood's predecessor).
I know nothing about Atwood, his politics or academic achievements, but perhaps someone more knowledgeable on the subject of the man's life could rewrite this in a more even-handed way. 50.131.247.95 (talk) 03:07, 19 October 2012 (UTC)encyclopedist1
