How many trips to England?

edit

According to the article,

"Records indicate that Manteo and Wanchese also went on a voyage from the New World to England sometime later in the same decade. Following the voyage, Manteo, Wanchese, and the English returned to Roanoke".

The source given for this is: Mancall, Peter C. Hakluyt's Promise: An Elizabethan's Obsession for an English America. New Haven: Yale University Press, 2007. 179

But can this be right? If Wanchese turned against the English, why would he return to England? And if, he did, when he he do it? Or is this simply a mistake? ----Asteuartw (talk) 15:43, 19 January 2013 (UTC)Reply

Agree with the previous post. If Wanchese turned against the English, why did he return to England and what happened to change his mind? (Is there a missing citation to proving that?) Otherwise, timelines under "Return to Roanoke" and "Relations With the Colonists" are a) either in error or b) rule out a 2nd trip to England. Given voyage lengths, it's difficult to believe he returned to Roanoke in 1585, became more distant,"finally" severed relations in 1586 (only 9 months later), yet returned later in the decade. Perhaps two sources are condensed or scrambled? Or the "finally" in '86 is incorrect? Or he didn't return to England? User:Susan.susan08
