Requested move 2007

The result of the proposal was OK, I'm going to cut the slack here. The phrase War in Afghanistan is most commonly referred & linked to the ongoing war; it's admittedly a recentism, but one that apparently won't go away soon. Ergo, it should redirect to War in Afghanistan (2001–present). Per Ewlyahoocom and Dekimasu, this page will be moved to War in Afghanistan (disambiguation), because it is, at least currently, a dab page. Having a Military history of Afghanistan as a separate article is an appealing idea, but someone should write it first; before that Wars in Afghanistan will redirect to the dab page. Wars in Afghanistan → War in Afghanistan — it's a disambiguation page, not a list —Ewlyahoocom 06:43, 11 October 2007 (UTC)

- Support. Ewlyahoocom 15:32, 11 October 2007 (UTC)
- Support People are more likely to look for a war in Afghanistan than several--victor falk 12:51, 17 October 2007 (UTC)
- Why not make it a list? American War redirects to List of wars involving the United States. How about List of wars in Afghanistan? Dekimasuよ! 05:28, 22 October 2007 (UTC)
- I like this suggestion. It does leave the problem of War in Afghanistan, Afghan War and Afghanistan War, which could arguably mean any or all of the "modern" wars -- but based on the links should redirect to War in Afghanistan (2001–present), compare to Iraq War. How about we move the current page to the list and make a new, smaller disambiguation with just Afghan Civil War, Soviet war in Afghanistan, and War in Afghanistan (2001–present) on it? Ewlyahoocom 06:00, 22 October 2007 (UTC)
- I'm not sure a new dab would be necessary. Redirecting all of those titles to the current war and dablinking the list from the top of that page (rather than linking to an actual dab) would seem to work all right. Dekimasuよ! 07:40, 22 October 2007 (UTC)

i agree we should have a page about afghanistan wars this region needs more coverage on wikipedia. theres knowlede of all the wars that the US has fought and theres good page for that like Dekimasu said.
Discussion
editNone of the linked articles are called "War in Afghanistan" - if anything it should be Afghan War, as most of the linked articles are variations on that. There's also the possibility of renaming as Military history of Afghanistan, and allowing expansion into a proper article. Jonathan Oldenbuck 13:53, 11 October 2007 (UTC)
- It's not the links on the page, it's the links to the page, which can be found here. Ewlyahoocom 15:32, 11 October 2007 (UTC)

Nevertheless that disambig exists. I'll move Anglo-Afghan war (war in lowercase) from here to there. Incnis Mrsi (talk) 15:28, 18 November 2008 (UTC)
The page has a link for Islamic conquest in the 7th and 8th centuries but its leaving out the Mongol Invasion and conquest which happens later the mongol conquest happined in two parts one part in the period from 1209 to 1227 and the second part was 1227 to 1279. but afganistan was not area of loose control like the russian municipalities or Turkey and caucus states. and the people in Iran were called Khwarizm Shahdom. but my point is if your going to include a much earlier Islam conquest then the later mongol conquest should also be included. i dont know much about afganistans history and ill be happy when i see how all this turns out. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 99.51.212.6 (talk) 23:26, 10 December 2009 (UTC)

War in Afghanistan → War in Afghanistan (disambiguation) — Move dab page to make way for redirect, move redirect page, which will then be pointed at War in Afghanistan (2001-present) per discussion on talk pages. Thundermaker (talk) 16:59, 25 June 2010 (UTC)
I tried to do this myself (non-admin) but it created an extra redirect when I did the first move. Doh! Thundermaker (talk) 16:59, 25 June 2010 (UTC)

War in Afghanistan → War in Afghanistan
- Unencyclopedic ahistoricism. Sure, now it is on the air waves every evening, but in a year or two this war will be forgotten in the lone and level sands stretched far away. An encyclopedia ought to be written for the ages, with men and women unborn in mind. Even with the present conflict, having readers coming first to this dab serves the didactic purpose of showing them that it is a phase of the Afghan Civil War and making finding background information easier. Regards, walk victor falk talk 23:01, 17 July 2010 (UTC)
- The discussion seems to have shifted from moving page War in Afghanistan (2001–present) to moving page War in Afghanistan (disambiguation). Anthony Appleyard (talk) 06:21, 20 July 2010 (UTC)
- Support I think the proposer actually means War in Afghanistan (2001–present) → War in Afghanistan. Unnecessary disambiguation. We have no other articles titled War in Afghanistan, and that page is a redirect to War in Afghanistan (2001–present). Clearly we have decided this is the primary topic. War in Afghanistan (disambiguation) has many pages that are not titled War in Afghanistan. Skinsmoke (talk) 03:03, 18 July 2010 (UTC)
- clarification Do you mean you support my proposal to move War in Afghanistan (disambiguation) → War in Afghanistan, i.e. as it was before July? walk victor falk talk 04:16, 18 July 2010 (UTC)
- Comment It wasn't clear that was what you intended. I would Oppose that proposal, as War in Afghanistan (2001–present) is clearly the primary topic for the term. None of the other items on the disambiguation page have been commonly referred to as the War in Afghanistan. Skinsmoke (talk) 06:03, 18 July 2010 (UTC)
- Please take into consideration of redirects such as Afghan War and Afghanistan War (often used as common names for the First, Second and Third Anglo-Afghan War), Wars in Afghanistan (can refer to the previously mentioned Anglo-Afghan Wars, the Afghan Civil War, or Babur's wars, among others), and more. The civil war in Afghanistan (of which the present conflict is a continuation) was commonly known as War in Afghanistan during the 1990s. walk victor falk talk 05:54, 19 July 2010 (UTC)
- Speedy close moving an article on top of itself is a null action and thus this nomination is invalid and/or malformed. Perhaps the nominator should refile with a correctly formated requested? 76.66.193.119 (talk) 02:23, 20 July 2010 (UTC)
- Comment the dab page should be restored to this location. 76.66.193.119 (talk) 02:23, 20 July 2010 (UTC)
- Comment the unilateral move of the dab page is a clear violation of consensus building and should be immediately reverted. It was also badly done, since it left the talk page behind. 76.66.193.119 (talk) 02:30, 20 July 2010 (UTC)
- War in Afghanistan (disambiguation) → War in Afghanistan (move) — violated previous WP:RM with a unilateral move without seeking a new consensus. (see Talk:War in Afghanistan, where the talk page was left behind after the move was made - the move was made on July 5, the move request failed on 2 July - clearly violating process) 76.66.193.119 (talk) 02:28, 20 July 2010 (UTC)
- Comment Not controversial, and should not be dealt with in isolation. There is a discussion already underway at Talk:War in Afghanistan. The pages War in Afghanistan (2001–present) and War in Afghanistan seem to have been hopelessly entangled (perhaps by "cut and paste" moves?) and partly divorced from their respective Talk pages. Suggest the three pages—War in Afghanistan, War in Afghanistan (2001–present) and War in Afghanistan (disambiguation) be discussed together, and that someone try to unentangle the mess. Skinsmoke (talk) 04:22, 20 July 2010 (UTC)
- Comment it qualifies as a speedy revert, as a new discussion would be opened after the reversion. Just because you move against consensus, does not mean you should be able to keep it that way. A new consensus discussion would be opened after the anti-consensus move is undone -- as described in the WP:RM page that describes this. 76.66.193.119 (talk) 04:36, 20 July 2010 (UTC)
- Comment: It would be easiest here, to discuss here merely whether to redirect War in Afghanistan to War in Afghanistan (2001–present) or to War in Afghanistan (disambiguation). That would be easier than any more confusing page moves. Currently War in Afghanistan has 3 visible edits, which are are all redirects, and 15 old deleted edits, which are all redirects or short disambigs. Talk:War in Afghanistan has one edit, which is a redirect to Talk:War in Afghanistan (disambiguation). Anthony Appleyard (talk) 11:06, 25 July 2010 (UTC)

RfC: Naming of these articles
editPlease discuss what names these two articles should have: War in Afghanistan (2001–present) and War in Afghanistan (disambiguation). Please also discuss where the following should redirect, if not used as either of the article titles: War in Afghanistan, Afghanistan War, Afghan War. Fences&Windows 23:53, 29 July 2010 (UTC)
- (I came here due to RFC notice). I would suggest this article should either be Wars in Afghanistan (disambiguation) or List of wars in Afghanistan. The redirects should be to this one. Those who arrive here by searching will soon identify the article they want. The name of the other article seems satsfactory to me, until foreign forces withdraw, when the name will need a terminal date, but at present this is unlikely to be until 2014. Peterkingiron (talk) 16:24, 2 August 2010 (UTC)
- I'm also here due to RfC notice. I agree that the disambig page should be called Wars in Afghanistan (disambiguation) or List of wars in Afghanistan. I think that War in Afghanistan should lead to the page about the current war, since that's what the vast majority of readers will be looking for. There should be a disambig link at the top of the page for the current war, pointing to the disambig/list page. As far as the title for the article for the current war, I'm not sure, and don't have any major problem with the current title (possible alternatives I could see would be U.S. war in Afghanistan, but again, I'm not really attached to one or the other right now). -- Jrtayloriv (talk) 18:53, 14 August 2010 (UTC)
Organization is inaccurate/arbitrary
editDespite the heading "Modern-era conflicts" separating half the page, the vast majority of conflicts on this page are modern as opposed to ancient or Medieval. The only conflicts that aren't modern:
- Conquest of Afghanistan by Alexander the Great (330 BC – 327 BC)
- Muslim conquests of Afghanistan (637–709)
- Conquest of Afghanistan by the Mongol Empire (13th century), see Mongol conquest of Central Asia.
