There is little evidence to indicate a general engagement, owing to two centuries of adaptation and the leadership of Robert Bruce, the Scottish army (both Gaelic and English-speaking[citation needed]) was able to defeat the attempted takeover by the English-crown.

I'm trying to figure out what kind of citation is wanted here. That the Gaels spoke Gaelic? I'm trying to avoid a Well, Duh reaction. Or that some spoke English and some Gaelic? Hardly hard to prove although many spoke French. Or do you want a citation that the Scots beat the English at Bannockburn? I can sure as heck provide that. Or that the English-crown tried to takeover Scotland? That's easy too. But this isn't particularly grammatical and I'm a bit puzzled at exactly what that sentence is trying to say.
