edit"The" Middlebrook Encampment usually refers to the 1777-8 winter quarters that were on the Middlebrook, but not in (what is now) Washington Valley, but on the plain between the Chimney Rock gorge and the village of Bound Brook. The military encampment that overlapped the present Park was a temporary fortified defensive position occupied in the spring of 1977, at the upper end of the Chimney Rock gorge.
