Recruitment from Wales

edit

Are there any numbers that are on public record about what percentage of the Welsh Guards are recruited from Wales? Conversly, are there any programmes within the Welsh Guards to promote the learning of Welsh?Drachenfyre 07:17, 4 September 2007 (UTC)Reply

I can shed some light on what it would have been in the past... My grandfather joined the Welsh Guards in 1939, he and his fellow guardsmen were all Welsh. However, his sergeant major and many of the officers were English. As this was 1939 and many people in the valleys spoke ONLY Welsh, a sizeable number of his comrades could not speak or understand English. As all of the orders were given in English, this was a big problem. Those who spoke no English were generally bullied by the SM when they could not understand orders. Whilst the bullying was harsh, it would have been dangerous for them to venture into theatre without knowing what they have to do and not do. So, through necessity, they learned English. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 81.154.230.167 (talk) 10:39, 17 December 2007 (UTC)Reply
Thank you very much 81.154.230.167! Mayhap I can find further information by writting to the Welsh Guards directly. It seems they should have some kind of programme in place to encourage the Welsh Guards to speak Welsh, especially as they will now be stationed in Wales! lol. Even if they simply provide social network groups for servicemembers to speak it in a social rather then command settingDrachenfyre (talk) 10:09, 10 January 2008 (UTC)Reply
