editI guess the mining settlement of La Rinconada ist much higher anw with a few 1000s inhabitants a real village or town. It lies between 5200 - 5500 metres. Wenchuan ist just a truck-stop, nobody is living there.
Query
editWhich La Rinconada are you speaking of? I presume it must be in the Andes - but it would be good to know for sure. The one in Spain has an elevation of only about 15 m. Thanks, John Hill (talk) 08:52, 8 February 2008 (UTC)
La Rinconada de Ananea, Peru[[1]] 14 38' S, 69 26' 45" W. If it has 30,000 people, it obviously has the prior claim.
If somebody can't establish Wenquan's claim, I will edit it out. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 24.108.37.224 (talk) 19:40, 9 February 2009 (UTC)
- Sounds fair enough to me - and at 5,400 metres (as claimed in the Wikipedia article) La Rinconada is considerably higher than Wenquan. I will, therefore, edit out the claim right now. Cheers - and thanks for pointing this out. John Hill (talk) 11:08, 10 February 2009 (UTC)
With my experience from the Peruvian Andes, it sounds somewhat unlikely that it is at 5400 meters, as you will usually be on a glacier at that altitude, while on the picture, you can see the glaciers at a distance. My out-of-the-blue guess based on that picture would be 4700 meters... It would be interesting to try to verify it.
Also, there is Sumxi[[2]] in Tibet, which is certainly a permanent settlement, with new concrete buildings and stuff. I was there two years ago. The coordinates for that page is accurate, they are from my GPS, and the altitude is 5200 meters. I have a more accurate figure at home. Kjetil Kjernsmo (talk) 07:49, 16 February 2009 (UTC)
Go to the above co-ordinates on Google Earth - it shows panoramio photos of La Rinconada, and you can see the plan of the settlement itself. The altimeter indicates that the community sprawls between 5000 and 5200 metres. You have to type in the co-ordinates 14 38' S, 69 26' 45" W , the search doesn't recognize LA RINCONADA.
Fixing coordinates
editThe coordinates in this article were for a wrong Wenquan. I've put in more or less correct ones. Vmenkov (talk) 10:57, 25 April 2010 (UTC)
Rename?
editHow to rename this article? If it were an actual town/township, Wikipedia talk:Naming conventions (Chinese) would imply it should become Wenquan, Golmud (because it is in Golmud County-level city). But it's not a town - it's just a locality (a truck stop and a military post) within what's called Tanggulashan Town, in Golmud county-level city. So should it be Wenquan, Golmud, Wenquan (locality), Golmud, Wenquan, Tanggula Town, Golmud? Vmenkov (talk) 11:52, 25 April 2010 (UTC)
