   Given the track record of the lead author (Chadwick), I am OK with the Frontiers in Marine Science paper as expert self-published even though the journal publisher is possibly predatory.

• The seamount is mostly known for its 2009 eruption, where it erupted pillow lava and tephra into the water from 2 vents. The "2" should be "two". See MOS:NUMERAL. There are a few more instances of this in the article.

• The east-northeast rift zone curves towards the east as it deepens and the west-southwest rift zone is west‐oriented towards its end. This needs a comma after "deepens" because you can split this into two sentences. Read User:Sammi Brie/Commas in sentences, which I wrote to help GA nominators parse this.

• I see the use of NE for Northeastern as an abbreviation is common in the academic literature. Should we spell it out or follow the literature's lead?

I think both of them work. If NE isn't understandable and prose enough, I can replace it with northeast/northeastern. I'm going to let NE stay. Reego41 11:55, 26 March 2023 (UTC)

• On the northern border of the basin can be found in the area where the Tonga Trench subduction transitions into convergent strike-slip where the direction of the faulting also changes from north–south to northwest–southeast. Very awkward sentence... I don't see a subject. What can be found in the area? This could be two sentences, honestly.

Fixed. The "in" in the first section of the sentence messed everything up, even I had trouble understanding it. I split it into 2 sentences, and reworded them. It should be more clear now. Reego41 11:55, 26 March 2023 (UTC)

• The NE Lau Basin has one of the highest upper mantle temperatures in the world, has one of Earth's coolest slab thermal parameters which is caused by the speed of convergence of the slab into the crust and its age and has among the highest slab water flux values of any oceanic subduction zone. An Oxford comma after "age" would tremendously help reading here. I'd also consider setting off "which is caused ... age" somehow.

At first I couldn't understand what the age was referencing in the paper but now I think the age refers to the age of convergence. So the cool slab thermal parameters are caused by the convergence speed and the convergence age. That's what I understand. Reego41 12:02, 26 March 2023 (UTC)

• West Mata and the surrounding NE Lau Basin is home should be "are" home

• The hydrothermal ecology of the Lau Basin is home to many endemic organisms including the Lamellibrachia columna which shows similarity to Lamellibrachia satsuma that can be found in Japan, Neobrachylepas relica which are a close relative to the Brachylepadomorpha which was extinct since the Miocene and more. This needs some grammar fixing. Try... The hydrothermal ecology of the Lau Basin is home to many endemic organisms, including the Lamellibrachia columna which shows similarity to Lamellibrachia satsuma that can be found in Japan; Neobrachylepas relica, a close relative to the Brachylepadomorpha which was extinct since the Miocene; and more.

• Hades was erupting with frequent magma bursts meanwhile Prometheus was showing a rapid degassing eruption. This needs punctuation. Add a semicolon after "bursts" and a comma after "meanwhile".

• Elevation changes at the flanks of the volcano were observed over the years, pointing out that West Mata has had many landslides at the years of the eruption. These landslides were observed by hydrophones and bathymetric surveys at the area over the years. The second sentence is redundant to the first; consider reconfiguring.

• Following the main eruption, several papers (including Chadwick Jr et al. 2019) suggests that in 2010–11 Several papers suggest.

Spot checks

• 2: Height. Its pre-2011 summit at 1159 mbsl rose from a base at ∼2900 mbsl Y
• 3: The details cited to Chadwick appear to be reproduced faithfully. See the note above. Y
• 5: Unsure how to parse this list of vents. Is "active, confirmed" what vouches for the source? It seems right, but again, not my field.

No idea why, but I seem to have cited the list to active hydrothermal vents. I replaced it with a page on the website dedicated to West Mata ([1]). Reego41 11:14, 26 March 2023 (UTC)

Almost there @Reego41... Can you tell me how the West Mata page supports the sentence Compared to these volcanoes, West Mata is the most hydrothermally active one, and its activity is not disputed? Cuz I'm having some trouble. Sammi Brie (she/her • t • c) 17:54, 26 March 2023 (UTC)

@Sammi Brie Oh, now I get why I put the link to the list. I put the list because the pages dedicated to the volcanoes nearby don't all say it's hydrothermally active, but ehh...
