later the West Brighton Houses,(politically motivated to tear the heart out of the community's vibrant commercial area, Castleton Avenue, began in 1960, to make the proposed Staten Island Mall more palatable), were constructed there.

Does this seem maybe a bit editorialized?Andrew Kirschner 14:30, 5 September 2007 (UTC)Reply

Wrong information!

edit

"The neighborhood was originally Italian, mostly from the town of Monacilioni (see External links below) from the, what was then called the, Abruzzi e Molise region of Italy. Now the neighborhood is made up of working class families of Irish and German descent." I do not see how anyone can say that this neighborhood was originally Italian when it was settled prior to the American Revolution. When I grew up there, on Davis Ave. just above Castleton, and went to PS 45 and JHS 27,there were Italian families, but they certainly were not a majority, and they certainly were not the original settlers. This phrase should be eliminated, please check your history.--Gordontaos (talk) 18:33, 21 November 2009 (UTC)Reply

West Brighton

edit

The proper name for this neighborhood is West Brighton not West New Brighton. My family has resided here since the 1850's and I am fifth generation. In fact my mother Cecelia N.Brunner and my brother Jim Harkins just had a book about our neighborhood published last month with Arcadia Publishing. The name of the book is West Brighton. If someone could make the change to the page I would appreciate it because I do not have an account. The neighborhood is roughly defined as the area around and to the northeast of the intersection of Jewett Avenue and Forest Avenue, This description is in 10302 not 10310. It should read Clove Ave as the western edge of West New Brighton (10310). Jewett Ave is considered Port Richmond

This was added to the Location section by an anon. I corrected the article (he/she's right) and moved the comment here. Nick1372 (talk) 00:17, 3 February 2014 (UTC)Reply
