Spelling is NOT correct for the District's name!
editThe spelling of the District's name IS Wanganui. The spelling 'Whanganui' is NOT even correct in the Wanganui River Maori language! - (203.211.72.223 (talk) 07:04, 5 June 2011 (UTC))

Whanganui District → Wanganui District – Page move is blocked by a redirect. The article contains up-to-date info about the current name of the subject (which my change in future but WP is not a crystal ball). – Nurg (talk) 00:49, 13 June 2015 (UTC)
- This is a contested technical request (permalink). EdJohnston (talk) 01:45, 13 June 2015 (UTC)
- Comment: Some people have requested the government to change the official name to Whanganui, which would agree with the current article name. On the other hand, the name Wanganui gets many more Google hits, and there is a local newspaper called the Wanganui Chronicle. This needs a discussion. EdJohnston (talk) 01:45, 13 June 2015 (UTC)
- Support. Look at the references in the article. Look at the official site of the Wanganui District Council. It is clearcut. Nurg (talk) 02:12, 13 June 2015 (UTC)
- Support. We should use the name that the district currently uses. The matter is confused by the naming of the principal city in the district, which can be spelled either Whanganui or Wanganui, and by the Whanganui River which was renamed in 1991, but the district name is clear.-gadfium 02:33, 13 June 2015 (UTC)
- Support. Use common name. Use official name. Use Wanganui. Fan | talk | 08:47, 13 June 2015 (UTC)

Wanganui District → Whanganui District – Name changed officially recently, but had been long signalled. A search in Google News[1] suggests the name has became the common name rapidly. -- haminoon (talk) 06:47, 6 January 2016 (UTC)
- Support Prior to the council applying for the name to be changed, it would have been inappropriate to change the title of this article. Now that they have, it removes a source of confusion, as one had to be aware that whilst the river and the city had the 'h' as part of their name, the district council did not. It is therefore not surprising that the council's new name has rapidly become the common name, and moving this article is thus the logical thing to do. Schwede66 01:33, 7 January 2016 (UTC)
- Support. As I said in the previous move request, we should use the name the council uses, and it now uses the 'h'.-gadfium 03:25, 7 January 2016 (UTC)
- Support. Although the name change from Wanganui to Whanganui is covered elsewhere, it should at least be wikilinked here with some additional explanation about changing the District [Council] name. E.g. Who decided to change the District name? What process did they follow? - Cameron Dewe (talk) 22:43, 7 January 2016 (UTC)
- See [2] which is the reference in this article.-gadfium 02:50, 8 January 2016 (UTC)
- Support. The river, district, and thus the city all now have a Wh, though people can choose to spell the city with a W. I've been thinking it might be good to spin off the section on the Whanganui article on the name controversies into its own article, covering the renaming of all three entities and attendant controversies.
