Example
editDoes the crappy "example of white space" make any sense, anyway? (Guidofd 05:43, 28 January 2006 (UTC))
- Not really. Feel free to ditch it. — mjb 07:21, 28 January 2006 (UTC)
Not a bad little article, but could use pictures as example, as in the referenced site. It might be nice to have some historical or cross-cultural info, too.
merge or explain the difference
editWhat is the difference between white space and negative space? If there's none, then perhaps a merge with the article negative_space —Preceding unsigned comment added by 83.94.195.21 (talk) 23:49, 1 August 2009 (UTC)

White space (visual arts) → White space — This is the primary topic. Whitespace character is both specifically related and derivative, in a way that's sufficiently obvious to a general audience. Other usages White spaces (radio) and White Space (management) are highly specialized. Pnm (talk) 03:08, 10 January 2011 (UTC)
- Mild support; I'm tempted to agree here, as "whitespace" referring to the character is almost always spelled as one word. I'd like to see whitespace redirect there, in fact. Powers T 15:27, 10 January 2011 (UTC)
- Oppose Last month there were 3818 views of the disambiguation page. But there were only 1872 views of the White space (visual arts) page. That suggests people looking for White space are not primarily looking for the visual arts page. For comparison Whitespace character got 2953 views and Whitespace 1428. (The views for Whitespace are separate from White space.) Tassedethe (talk) 22:38, 10 January 2011 (UTC)
- So 1,428 of those 3,818 views came through the Whitespace redirect; they shouldn't count when determining primary topic for White space. That leaves 2,390 compared to 1,872, which is much closer. Powers T 23:40, 10 January 2011 (UTC)
- No the view counts are separate. If you look at the Whitespace views there is a massive spike on Dec 21 that you do not see for White space. The total number of people going to the page is 3818+1428+plus any other redirects. Tassedethe (talk) 00:45, 11 January 2011 (UTC)

- Oppose ; as a member of the general audience (i.e. not especially interested in art) it's not at all obvious to me, and I would say the meaning best suited to being the primary topic is 'whitespace' in text, though that may be my background. That one meaning is derivative of another does not determine the primary topic: usually it makes both candidates for inclusion on the DAB page unless one is much more common than the other.--JohnBlackburnewordsdeeds 23:58, 10 January 2011 (UTC)
- It sounds like you're saying Space (punctuation) is the primary topic for White space. Would you clarify whether or not that's what you mean? --Pnm (talk) 01:48, 11 January 2011 (UTC)
- 'whitespace' for me is the space between text in programming languages (my day job), HTML and similar, i.e. it's made up of spaces, tabs, sometimes carriage return/linefeed. I.e. the content of Whitespace character is for me the primary topic, but that does relate to my own interests and profession.--JohnBlackburnewordsdeeds 23:00, 11 January 2011 (UTC)
- Sounds like you're part of the technical computing audience. --Pnm (talk) 00:55, 12 January 2011 (UTC)

- Oppose most certainly NOT the primary topic. The whitspace character would be that. The technical whitespace radio spectrum would be more likely for an encyclopedia. 65.94.71.179 (talk) 22:54, 11 January 2011 (UTC)
- Oppose. Page composition is a worthy specialty, but it's as much a specialty as radio. Jim.henderson (talk) 23:44, 11 January 2011 (UTC)
