Talk:Whoami

I cannot find any differences between "echo $USER" and "whoami". When I use "su root" on Slackware 13.37 they both return "root". Does anyone have a source for this information? Is there a parallel between this and any Wikipedia/MediaWiki tools?

I was trying to figure out exact details about my user account, such as the username used internally and any permission groups I'm in. In the former case, it's presumably either macks2008 or Macks2008, but knowing for sure would be nice. In the latter case, I know I'm auto-confirmed, but I was curious if there were any other groups I've been automatically (or manually) added to. Does anyone know how I can find this information? edit: whoops, forgot signature (but I'll leave the auto-signature because there's no point in changing it now.
