Some parts do not seem to have "neutral viewpoint"

edit

"It can hardly be doubted that his was the most influential work..." doesn't seem very neutral. It is not provided as a quotation. There does not appear to be a reference to support the view. How can it be verified? 192.30.202.21 (talk) 21:56, 12 August 2009 (UTC)Reply

Jana Wilcox.

edit

There is no listing for "Jana Wilcox" (1893) in the Library of Congress and Indiana University Press which is credited in a linked article with putting out an edition in 1969 edited by Clara Kirk has no record of it. Dr. Kirk taught at Rugers, but this work does not appear in the faculty publications of any of the four universities. Consultation with two Howells experts who checked various biographies turned up nothing. Also in 1893, Howells was at the height of his popularity and had he written this novella, it would certainly have appeared somewhere. Therefore, I think this entry is bogus. -- RobertAllen11 (talk) 02:31, 21 January 2011 (UTC)Reply

Winifred Howells?

edit

Might you add a word to this biography about Howells's daughter? It needn't be long: something like "His daughter, Winifred Howells, also wrote some poetry, but died young." Her promise deserves a mention: the brevity of her work and her life would mitigate against a separate entry. 128.147.28.69 (talk) 14:26, 31 May 2012 (UTC)Reply

Article overhaul

edit

I'm hoping someone would be willing to work on an overhaul of this article. For one thing, the biography of Howells should be expanded and fully referenced. It should also include some general analysis of his literary output. Finally, I would recommend creating a new page listing Howells's works, considering just how many of them there are. Is anyone interested in collaborating? --Midnightdreary (talk) 16:24, 4 September 2012 (UTC)Reply

Unexpected Guest

edit

While working on Senda Berenson Abbott, I found a reference stating she had performed the lead role in a play by William Dean Howells. The name of the play in the source was “Unexpected Guest”. Other sources refer to “the Unexpected Guest” but I see neither in the list of works in the article, or the extended list at the top of the page. Surely it is the same person? Any thoughts on the discrepancy?--S Philbrick(Talk) 16:57, 24 April 2015 (UTC)Reply

It's the same author. I wouldn't call it a discrepancy, however; I don't think the list is intended to be a complete one. In fact, I'd cut it down further if I was more knowledgeable about WDH. --Midnightdreary (talk) 21:56, 24 April 2015 (UTC)Reply

List of works

edit

The list of works has grown tremendously and, of course, reflect Howells's output as a writer. It seems to have overtaken the article, however, and I'm wondering if a forked article, something like Bibliography of William Dean Howells, would be appropriate. --Midnightdreary (talk) 12:33, 21 September 2018 (UTC)Reply
