Agreed, this should probably be mentioned. - Shiftchange (talk) 01:19, 11 January 2008 (UTC)Reply

Height

-do we know? Seems a relevant stat. Fortuna Imperatrix Mundi 16:03, 18 January 2016 (UTC)Reply

Q. Serious question, how do you measure the height of a bridge? Obviously you start at the top but then what do you measure down to? The water (which changes with the tides?), the surrounding land (which is higher on the northern side than the southern side)?

According to [1] (a reliable source) the William Jolly is 12 metres above the highest astronomical tide, but I presume that's the distance to the bottom of the deck (clearance for shipping purposes) and not a measurement to the top of the arches. Kerry (talk) 23:30, 18 January 2016 (UTC)Reply

According to [2] (probably not a reliable source) it's 5.28 metres high, but it's not clear what that measurement represents. Having driven across the bridge many times and looking at Google Street View to compare the height of the arches with the height of the cars travelling across, I would say it is the distance from the top of the deck to the top of the arches. There are a mass of numbers here (probably very reliable - they were building it) but none I think gives us the information we want. I suspect this document might be very useful but it's not online. Kerry (talk) 23:47, 18 January 2016 (UTC)Reply
