editI have posted this same question in Talk:Pneumonectomy
There is a clear disagreement in the sources as to who carried out the the first pneumonectomy. The NAHSTE project attributes it to William Macewen (the article doesn't give the year, but other online sources say in 1895). However PubMed in this abstract attributes it to Rudolf Nissen in 1931.
Historical disputes over who was the first to do this-or-that are common; but usually they arise for claims that are more or less contemporary. There are 36 years between these two dates. Can anyone shed any light on this? --BillC 08:15, 14 August 2005 (UTC)
This is, I believe, now resolved. William Macewen was the first (in 1895) to carry out a pneumonectomy in multiple stages, Nissen the first (in 1931) to carry out the first successful total pneumonectomy in two stages. See Talk:Pneumonectomy --BillC 00:46, 17 August 2005 (UTC)
