Action undertaken: Aggressive Edit to bring in line with Wikipedia standards:
Main changes follow:
- Some information had to go because it was genealogical in nature as opposed to pertinent historical fact. There are other projects on the web for recording genealogy and you may copy any information lost from the history.
- Also the details of the Raid of Ruthven should only appear on the [Raid of Ruthven]] page otherwise that information has to be maintained in 2 places.
If anyone would like to make a case for inclusion of anything I removed we can discuss it here.
Problem with second wife
editWilliam's 2nd wife as describe on this page is his first wife's mother. Citation most certainly needed! 131.111.40.205 (talk) 15:05, 26 June 2015 (UTC)
Updates to children
editThe link and mentioning of Mary's third marriage to James Hepburn is unclear in how it relates to the casket letters, so I removed that and linked to Lord Darnley instead.
Regarding William's Marriage: William's wife Dorothea was in fact his half-sister, but he only married the one time, a marriage contract was in place for him when he was younger to Mary the daughter of Patrick, 4th Lord Gray, but that fell through. He did not marry Janet Stewart, and Dorothea was the styled Dowager Countess of Gowrie after his execution in 1584.
Regarding Children: I also updated the children listed, specifically noting that William Ruthven did not in fact escape to Virginia, but was mentioned by his own brother Patrick in a letter from 1622-1631 as having died in France without heirs. I've linked two sources on that, one is the primary, the NAS, but it is no longer available online. The other is referencing the original letter just for backup in case someone would like to contest it. Murfman (talk) 17:08, 8 November 2018 (UTC)
This page has the identity of his mother wrong.
editOther Wikipedia page say Janet Douglas not Janet Stewart was his mother, his marriage to a daughter of Janet Stewart would not have been allowed if she was his mother. And his birthday was over a decade before his father married Janet Stewart.--KuudereKun 15:49, 20 February 2022 (UTC)
- It turns out you are part right. William Ruthven, fourth Lord Ruthven, First Earl of Gowrie, married Dorothea Stewart, the daughter of Henry, first Lord Methven, and Janet Stewart, Countess of Sunderland. The countess was also the second wife of Patrick, third Lord Ruthven after his marriage to Janet Douglas. It all gets confusing if I'm honest. I'll fix it here, but where are you seeing Janet Douglas as William's wife, because that is wrong as well. Murfman (talk) 20:46, 8 March 2022 (UTC)
- you were entirely correct, I misread your message. Apologies. I have corrected the mother. Murfman (talk) 21:27, 8 March 2022 (UTC)
