South Hams in 1987

edit

Is it worth saying more about his surprising decision to fight this safe Conservative seat in 1987? His obituary in The Guardian by Andrew Roth pointed out some MPs at the time suggested it was because defeated MPs could pick up extra money that MPs who did not stand again could not, but Roth notes Hamilton was not eligible and so have benefited from this. Roth went on to note "It was not impossible that he would have liked to cash in on any Tory tabloids claiming that this had been his motivation" - ie suggesting he might have done it hoping to sue a newspaper who jumped to the wrong conclusion.[1] I am tempted to include this in the article, but I wonder if it is too speculative (and getting into conspiracy theory territory).
