Winans and The Winans

edit

When I added the names of some Winans individuals to this page a few weeks ago, it was my intention to make this a true disambiguation page, i.e. one that would help Wikipedia users find anybody with the Winans surname, not just the members of a currently popular gospel vocal group. Last night, I changed the links in several pages to reflect what I hope was the true intention of the authors of those pages -- to link to the page about The Winans.

There have been a number of Winans who have played a significant, or interesting, rôle in history. Although it may or may not be possible to prove, all the Winans in the United States seem to be descendants of:

  • OR of slaves owned by a Rev. William Winans of Mississippi, who was John's great-great-great-grandson. This category includes the gospel group.

I look forward to the addition of pages for additional Winans individuals to Wikipedia and to the expansion, or correction, of existing pages.

Miscellaneous

edit

Today I added Charles Winans Chipp to this disambiguation page in a "miscellaneous" category. Although he has a famous middle name, I'm not sure how he's related to any of the Winans. If somebody has information on the Winans-Chipp connection, please leave a note here.

Tjmayerinsf, thanks for adding the Winans Camel under Miscellaneous. I was thinking of doing that myself but never got around to it. Complementing the Camel, I've added a reference to the Cigar Ship.

Today I added Lewis Winans Ross under "miscellaneous". Okay, so who was Lewis? According to Alice Winans Egy Woolley's book Winans Family Genealogy, Lewis' mother, Mary "Polly" (Winans) Ross, was the great-great-granddaughter of the original Winans immigrant, John (Jan) Winans. Mrs. Woolley's book is available from the LDS church's Family History Library, on microfiche #6088122.

I just came across Dozzell and added him. Does anybody happen to know how he came to have "Winans" as one of his two middle names?

Jan Wijnants

edit

Today I added the Dutch painter, Jan Wijnants, to this page. I have no idea whether he's related, but some Winans family historians like to claim him, so why not.

And today I deleted Jan, since he and a few other people with similar names are now included in a Wynant disambiguation page which Gjs238 just started. I doubt that the people in that page are related to the various Winans, but the names are close enough to cause confusion.
