I agree, LMM is a downgrade vs. original/regular MM. Both are basic videoeditors, but regular MM gets stuff DONE, whereas LMM gets done NOTHING b/c it is a barebones crude slideshow arranger, not a useful Video Editing app. LMM is a relfection of Microsoft's current drive to cater to an 'average", less skillful consumer and in general dumbification of society. Live MM is a piece of you know what. As of me, due to introduction of LMM & inability to download latest regular MM 6.1 (you can only download 2.6 from Microsoft, while 6.1 is nowhere to be found anymore), I reluctantly had to abandon MM completely. Using "Adobe PremiereElements 10"; plus people recommend "Arcsoft Showbiz", "Pinnacle Videospin", and "Videopad" which are not related. For Macs, it's "iMovie", but I am on Windows so it's Adobe PremElements. Is Windows Live Movie Maker compatable with Windows XP? (Answer below)

Hello,

I am aware that there is a BIG confusion about whether Windows Live Movie Maker is compatible with Windows XP so I would like to tell everyone whether it is or not (and how).

So I would like to point out to everyone that Windows Live Movie Maker is NOT compatable with Windows XP.

"How? It (Ref. 2) says that it's compatible with the 32-bit edition Windows XP!"

Yes, Ref. number 2 does. And that is the sentence that is causing the confusion. At first I thought it was compatible with the 32-bit Windows XP but it is not. Some may have noticed the sentence saying "Windows Live Movie Maker is not supported on Windows XP" and are thinking that it is wrong or it's the other versions of Windows XP that's not supported. Well let me explain:

How Windows XP is not supported

What you see on the page is what is required to download the file. HOLD IT! Look carefully. At the top it says " Essentials: System Requirements." And look at the right hand side of the page. Somewhere it says "Programs that you can download". That is all that you get in the file but the Movie Maker is not included if you download the file on Windows XP.

Movie Maker missing in Live installer

I've downloaded the installer for the BETA-versions of all Windows Live applications, but the Movie Maker was not included. I tried it with the German and the English version.

I'm using Windows XP, so I wonder wether this application might be available to Vista only. Is this the reason why it doesn't work or are there other errors? --Oli W 93 (talk) 16:02, 1 October 2008 (UTC)

Windows Live Movie Player is Vista, Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 compatable. Bo98 (talk) 15:35, 22 July 2009 (UTC)

Becaue it needs WDDM drivers ( AERO ) for its effects! And as you can see the newer version, 2011 is totally incompatible with XP , even Messenger and MAil needs now DirectX11 and come Aero features. XP is old and unsupported for these eyecandy customer toys. MS is moving rapidly the application model to Vista and 7 only, to take finally advantage of all the new APIS that XP dont have. My guess is they included this showstopper in the 2009 edition of Live Suite to hint at XP users that support is coming to an end. ( "support" and "new apps" is not = "security updates" )

Proposed move or merger with Windows Movie Maker

• Support: First, there is a notability problem; Windows Live Movie Maker does not cite significant coverage in reliable secondary sources. So, a merger will definitely fix the problem. Second, there is the small size of the article. Third, they seem to be the same subject. Microsoft may sometimes separate a component from operating system but that does not make it a different subject. Neither does a "major rewrite".
