Notable people: Dick Francis

edit

Does anyone know what Dick Francis's association is with Wokingham? There is nothing on his Wiki page. If he has a connection with Wokingham I think we need an explanation. Dahliarose 23:35, 12 November 2006 (UTC)Reply

He never lived in Wokingham. I believe he may have worked at a stables nearby but dont know where Im afraid. The answer will be in his autobiogrpahy.--Peeky (talk) 17:44, 2 July 2011 (UTC)Reply

Blind Terror: Old Rose Interior

edit

The article says Blind Terror shows the interior of the Old Rose pub, but I would disagree. The view outside the Window is much further down the road. I would guess that the current Ladbrokes outlet used to be a pub, and that is the interior seen in the film. But maybe someone else can give their opinion? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 82.0.179.201 (talk) 23:51, 7 July 2007

The film definitely shows the interior of the Old Rose pub. The Interior of the pub has substantially changed. The bar has moved, but the old fire place which can be seen in the film remains. Later in the film there is also another interesting shot near Easthampstead Road.--Peeky (talk) 17:44, 2 July 2011 (UTC)Reply

Proposed merge of Wokingham (borough) into this article

Take a look at the Reading article. Reading, a much larger article (and place) than Wokingham, has information on both the place and borough in one article. Seeings that both this and the Wokingham (borough) article are so much smaller, I see no reason not to do it here too. If no one objects, I'll do it sometime next week. TheIslander 18:30, 24 August 2007 (UTC)Reply

Bad idea. Reading and Reading Borough being in the same article is itself contraversial (see Talk:Reading, Berkshire), but certainly makes more sense than merging Wokingham and Wokingham Borough. You could be justified in refering to anywhere within Reading Borough as 'Reading'. This is not the case with places in Wokingham Borough. Indeed, Earley and other places are part of the Reading urban area. I believe to is convention for the borough to be a separate article when the area is bigger than the town after which it is named. Wokingham (borough) could do with an expansion tag. Verica Atrebatum 11:44, 25 August 2007 (UTC)Reply
OK, fair enough. I'll probably give up the idea, then, but I'd like to leave the tags up for a little longer; guage some more opinion. TheIslander 19:59, 25 August 2007 (UTC)Reply
I also think it's better to maintain the status quo. Wokingham Borough covers a very wide area including Twyford, Wargrave, Winnersh and it would be confusing to have articles for say schools (eg, Forest School) in these places pointing to the town rather than the borough. Dahliarose —The preceding signed but undated comment was added at 18:06, August 26, 2007 (UTC).
I agree that is better to keep the status quo. The naming convention is fairly explicit that where a larger local government district is named after a smaller place (as in Wokingham), there should be separate articles. IMHO, the same should be true where a smaller local government district carries the same name as a larger place (as in Reading) but that is not what the convention currently says. Because of this, the current Reading article is the result of an uneasy compromise. -- Chris j wood 11:27, 28 August 2007 (UTC)Reply

Area of Wokingham

edit

0.9 sqaure miles seems an inconsistently small area for the town considering the population is 30000 (that would give it a population density greater than central London). I am assuming the the boundaries for population and area measurement are different, but if that is the case the claims are misleading. Can anyone find like-for-like measurements? If not, I suggest the 'area' claim is removed or modified. a_boardley (talk) 15:57, 2 June 2009 (UTC)Reply

Blocked school vandals User:194.80.76.200

edit

I have deleted The Wheelwrights were the first family to found the town and give it the name of Wokingham. At first it was part of Sandhurst until the Wheelwrights bought the rights and privileges of the Wokingham area. This was a joke insertion by User 194.80.76.200 made4 May 2010 and not noticed til now. Unfortunately it has been repeated round the Internet. Until 18 October 2010 the vandal User:194.80.76.200 made many edits. The account was blocked 18 October 2010. How many other false insertions by this vandal remain remain?--Wetman (talk) 20:06, 4 May 2012 (UTC)Reply

I have suggested that Westende Junior School should be merged to here as it is a non-notable primary school, as per WP:SCHOOLOUTCOMES. Any comments appreciated. CalzGuy (talk) 09:23, 11 March 2017 (UTC)Reply

Merge school

edit

I have restored the {{merge school}} template on Westende Junior School - any comments appreciated here. CalzGuy (talk) 21:35, 9 August 2017 (UTC)Reply

  • Oppose merge: notable through "‘The Acorns’, the first junior school resource in Berkshire for pupils with a diagnosis of Special Educational Need for autism spectrum disorders (ASD)". Klbrain (talk) 17:51, 12 August 2018 (UTC)Reply
  • Looks like a reasonable suggestion, there's very little in that article which is at all distinctive and it could be covered in the Education section here. Hut 8.5 18:10, 12 August 2018 (UTC)Reply

Confusion between Wokingham Town & Wokingham Borough information on this page

edit

In the introductory section, and the Governance section in particular, the information seems to be focused mainly about Borough of Wokingham, not Wokingham town. I'd like to recommend that information relating specifically to the Borough geographical area / unitary authority is moved to the Borough page, and the scope of this page is reduced to focus specifically on the areas within the town boundaries (Evendons (including Woosehill), Emmbrook, Norreys, and Wescott). Similarly the Governance section should be handled the same way governance is covered on any of the other Wokingham borough town/village pages such as Finchampstead - that it focuses on the Town Council, and links out to the Borough page. The current information about the Borough governance should be moved onto the Borough page, whose Governance section is pretty basic. Rillaith (talk) 14:12, 23 March 2022 (UTC)Reply
