"Inspiration for Citizen Smith" nonsense

Certain newspapers - like the cited reference to The Guardian - have been trying to suggest that a 1977 diary piece in The Times about the above group was the inspiration for Citizen Smith. This is complete nonsense. The diary entry in question appeared in the edition of 19 April 1977, a week after the Citizen Smith pilot was transmitted (in the Comedy Special strand). It goes without saying that the production will have been recorded some weeks prior to that transmission date, and the script written many months beforehand. It's not impossible that it could have been an influence on the ongoing series, but it clearly wasn't the inspiration for it, unless there was an earlier diary piece. Warofdreams talk 20:00, 26 November 2013 (UTC)

A slightly connected issue - the reference to the Times diary implies that multiple references were made to the South London Workers' Bulletin. I have checked carefully and can find only the one linked. Unless I'm overlooking one, it ought to be recast as a singular mention. Sam Blacketer (talk) 22:02, 26 November 2013 (UTC)

Although using multiple search terms, I also failed to find any reference to the group in The Times before the piece of 19 April 1977, nor after it to the end of that year. Nick Cooper (talk) 09:56, 27 November 2013 (UTC)
