FISA proper name

Swlenz (talk · contribs) is currently making edits across wikipedia altering "International Rowing Federation" to the "International Federation of Rowing Associations". I feel this needs to be discussed before too many edits are made.

I have always thought FISA was known as the "International Rowing Federation" and they always refer to themselves as this on their website:

• "The International Rowing Federation (FISA) has announced this year’s World Rowing Event.." [1]
• "FISA, the International Rowing Federation, is empowered by its member National Rowing Federations.." [2]

My opinion is that although "International Federation of Rowing Associations" is the literal translation from the French, since they are commonly known as the "International Rowing Federation" this is the name that should be used across Wikipedia. Image:M fisa logo.gif is being used on this article. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is no explanation or rationale as to why its use in this Wikipedia article constitutes fair use. In addition to the boilerplate fair use template, you must also write out on the image description page a specific explanation or rationale for why using this image in each article is consistent with fair use.

FISA's member National Federations

FISA counts 130 member National Federations (not 118 as indicated in this article). Ghana and Vanuatu were admitted at the 2008 FISA Ordinary Congress which was held in Linz, Austria, last July, bringing the number up from 128 in 2007 (See http://www.worldrowing.com/display/modules/news/dspNews.php?newid=324457). Member federations are referred to by FISA as National Federations (See FISA Statutes http://www.worldrowing.com/medias/docs/media_352460.pdf). Legal form

Is anyone able to figure out which legal form FISA has (and, if there is a history, had in the past)? —MisterSynergy (talk) 12:22, 10 November 2017 (UTC)

Okay, I might have found the answer by myself. According to the FISA Rule Book, Article 1, it is a Swiss association according to Art. 60ff of the Swiss Civil Code, with both NPO and NGO character. I cannot find FISA in the Swiss company register, but registration is not mandatory and, in fact, rather untypical for Swiss associations. —MisterSynergy (talk) 11:57, 13 November 2017 (UTC)

World Rowing Federation → World Rowing – I believe the COMMONNAME is World Rowing, which is what they consistently use fro themselves. There are examples out there of using World Rowing Federation but I think they're rare. World Rowing is also more CONCISE. For what it's worth, World Rowing Federation is not the official name. According to their Bylaws, the official name is still FISA, but "World Rowing is the designation used operationally by FISA." Are you saying “World Rowing” is ambiguous? Do people refer to the World Rowing Championships as “World Rowing”? We have many sports governing bodies with this kind of name and championships such as World Aquatics and World Aquatics Championships that do not seem to suffer from this ambiguity. Even of it was ambiguous, you would need to say that the governing body is not the WP:PRIMARYTOPIC for World Rowing for the page not to be moved. If it’s ambiguous we should just add a hat note to World Rowing (disambiguation) where the races would be listed. —JFHutson (talk) 15:03, 1 August 2024 (UTC)
