Pronunciation
editI seem to recall that Worplesdon is pronounced "Wer..." rather than "Wor..." If this is correct it is werth mentioning in the article. Diomedea Exulans (talk) 10:10, 26 November 2011 (UTC)
- That sure makes since given the place name (and 99% of other) orthography as it would have been Warplesdon for the present sound said. People's lack of understanding of wa / we / wo words is due to their old manuscript line form akin to ||| (a graphic form of W) that skewed all the norman scribes/writers versions of how they in education decided to put all w words which distances them from their normal vowel sound after w. It has changed 95%+ or more of people's pronunciation e.g. Worple road, Wimbledon, into "basic intuitive" without "advanced understanding" — OK, not for word and worth, but for the bulk of place names. If the French/Normans/others actually used w for a long time before they got here in 1066 it would have helped matters enormously but of course they did not; why teachers don't teach children about the faded ink of Norman scholars and their ways of writing is a shame but this is the resulting pronunciation, intuitive and we are not (under WP:NOTBOOK) to cover ideally anachronistic (even if more meaningful pronunciations) in the articles here sadly. I'm going to sound like a Norman overlord for a second, what pray is a Wurple? It has not semblance to the rest of the language.- Adam37 Talk 16:40, 6 March 2018 (UTC)
