– I suggest that the Olympic wrestling article names are in need of an overhaul to achieve consistent, meaningful and unambiguous naming. We have a complete set of articles up until 1936 and the naming convention is as follows: "Wrestling at the <yyyy> Summer Olympics – Men's <style> <weight class name>". We then have articles from 1968 onwards and they follow the following convention: "Wrestling at the <yyyy> Summer Olympics – Men's <style> <weight limit> kg".

  • Firstly, I suggest that "Men's" can be dropped from the article title as prior to 2004, as only men competed.
  • Secondly, "Men's" and "Women's" should be consistently part of the article names from 2004 onwards to avoid confusion.
  • Thirdly, it's very confusing to list the weight limit in the article name given that the limits have been adjusted over the years. It's much easier to follow what is going on when the weight class name is used. This also makes it simpler to cross-reference to the main reference database, Sports Reference, as they use the weight class name with their bios and not the weight limit.

I might add that if adopted, this would bring the naming conventions in line with those for boxing. To test whether there is support for these suggestions I'll put a few select articles up for formal discussion. If this turns out to be uncontentious, we can simply move the remaining articles. If consensus isn't clear we can put all the articles through a formal move proposal. Schwede66 19:56, 15 November 2018 (UTC)Reply
