Poorly Done Page - Significance and History Needs to Be Drawn Out
editUnfortunately, I don't have sufficient resources to be able to develop and reference the history of this place, but for a reasonable page, this needs to be done. Basically, the school was established in 1968 to reinvigorate the conversation between Marx and Freud. The program was very interdisciplinary, with faculty from sociology, philosophy, and history; only a few were from psychology. The program was very spare - there were only 4 required courses, two of which were "Psychopathology" followed by a course that criticized the notion. There was a clinic in which to practice, and students wrote a thesis. Up until 1985 in California, it was possible to practice psychology as long as one had a PhD in any field, and passed the state board exams. This school became recognized as _the_ place to come for critical psychoanalysis, and in particular the place for people who already had PhDs in other fields, like sociology, literature or history, to come and learn psychoanalysis by practicing in the clinic and writing a dissertation.
This school has gone through major transformations since it's founding, and it is a mistake to see it as only one school. Early on, the institute was faculty run, and there were bitter fights in the process of eliminating faculty power to manage the running of the school. There were major faculty and curricular changes in 1985 when the California laws changed and in 1995 when the decision was made to completely reorganize the school around the APA accredited system of education. Many schools on the west coast went the same way, jettisoning their PhD programs and replacing them by the APA's "PsyD"s. Some schools resisted this change - in the SF Bay area, a notable one was the Pacific School of Clinical Psychology.
This is the story of a very interesting, well recognized institute, established during a time of political foment and at a time when psychology held out some promise for understanding and social transformation, going through a decline and completely losing it's critical roots. I hope that someone here can tell this story in a form that would be acceptable for WikiPedia. DiagonalArg (talk) 02:17, 3 August 2009 (UTC)
Deletion
editThe Wright Institute "(I)n its own field it is quite famous, but obviously not as famous as Berkeley." according to Derek Draper - ref David Hencke guardian.co.uk, Thursday 12 February 2009 01.29 GMT (Msrasnw (talk) 15:38, 14 July 2009 (UTC))
Added some more info explaining Sanford's motivation and categories and removed delete tag(Msrasnw (talk) 11:02, 15 July 2009 (UTC))
Draper, uncited
editHi, I am taking draper out as there is no citation for him. Please feel free to replace him when or if you have one. (Off2riorob (talk) 12:03, 15 July 2009 (UTC))
Notability
editClear Notability.
"Organizations are usually notable if they meet both of the following standards: 1. The scope of their activities is national or international in scale."
People attend the Wright Institute from various parts of the US and from other countries Founder famous with own wikipedia page
"2. Information about the organization and its activities can be verified by third-party, independent, reliable sources."
Program Accredited by American Psychological Association Ranked by Social Psychology Network
Other things - "The organization’s longevity " Since 1968
Not sure of why there is any doubt about notability. (Msrasnw (talk) 13:20, 15 July 2009 (UTC))
note the founder is not famous, ho is barely even notable, why don't you merge this page with his? (Off2riorob (talk) 16:18, 16 July 2009 (UTC))
Founder Nevitt Sanford
You have inserted 3 cites, one is the institute itself, another is a list of institutes and the third is an obituary, have you got anthing else to show notability for this place? (Off2riorob (talk) 15:41, 16 July 2009 (UTC))
- Also cite 4 is not working and in that link it does not clearly state that Draper has this MA, and there is some degree of discussion about this, I would like to see if you are going to claim this MA for him, that there is a strong cite. (Off2riorob (talk) 15:52, 16 July 2009 (UTC))
coatrack
editIs this about draper or about the wright instir=tute? I see you have 3 cites for draper and 3 cites for wright institute, (Off2riorob (talk) 21:39, 15 July 2009 (UTC))
Famous almoni
editYou have started this coatrack , do you have any other famous almomi to mention or is it draper you want to mention, if so then you should make that cler. (Off2riorob (talk) 21:45, 15 July 2009 (UTC)) I retitled this section to derik draper. Do you know of any other famous almuni? if not then is this about draper so I have titled it draper, feel free to change it if you knoe more famous almoni. (Off2riorob (talk) 21:50, 15 July 2009 (UTC))
I am not sure about your tone in general, your use of "coatrack" and also what your problem is with this entry. This entry was the result of an institution being relevant in another article and then someone finding out about it and writing about it who wanted to know about it. What is there here that is not useful information and how does it attack anyone or put a negative light on anyone? The Wright Institution seems to me to be a small graduate school founded by someone with a nice CV which is worthy of note in and of itself and is worthy of note in the UK because of Draper's story. But it would seem to me to be ridiculous to have a section headed Draper because he is the only famous alumni. The excessive citations to Draper (3 out of the six) were only there to allow the information to be kept and avoid the information being deleted again. (Msrasnw (talk) 22:58, 15 July 2009 (UTC)).
The school is still not notable...this article looks to me.. lke it's actually about Draper. So the notability of the company seems a bit in doubt, Ill let it alone and see if it develops and then if it does not develop i'll nominate it for deletion or merger. Also Daper is notable but he is not famous by any stretch of the imagination.(Off2riorob (talk) 15:37, 16 July 2009 (UTC))
Qualification.
editThe gardians apology says... The following clarification was printed in the Guardian's Corrections and clarifications column, Friday 13 January 2009
We stated in this article that Derek Draper attended the Wright Institute in Berkeley, California, and said that the institute did not offer full-time degrees. We would like to clarify that Mr Draper did attend the institute full-time from 2001 to 2004.
Just that he attende for 3 years. Is there a cite to clearly say he has the MA. ? (Off2riorob (talk) 15:58, 16 July 2009 (UTC))
- Here draper does state that he has... [[1]]

Founding section correction
editThe first part of the second sentence: "His approach was motivated by the desire to reinvigorate the "conversation" between Marx and Freud..." does not appear in the cited reference here: http://query.nytimes.com/gst/fullpage.html?res=990CE1DC1531F932A25754C0A963958260. Freudo-Marxism is also not mentioned on Sanford's Wikipedia page and seems an unfounded and rather negative portrayal of him. May I remove it and add this, which does appear exactly in the reference:
"Dr. Sanford first gained prominence as a co-author of "The Authoritarian Personality," a study of anti-Semitism published in 1950. His co-authors included two refugees from Nazi persecution, Thomas Adorno and Else Frenkel-Brunswik."
