The jalap is a plant native to the mountains of Mexico, and its name is evidently a corruption of that of the town of Xalapa, in the neighborhood of which it was first encountered.

This name has often varied, undoubtedly, as has been pointed out, because of the difficulty of rendering, in other languages, the Spanish pronunciation of the word Xalapa. This is how, in ancient authors, we find it replaced by the words: Gelapo, Chelapa, Chelepa, Celapa, Celopa, Selapa, Zalopa, Zalap, Jalapa, Jalappa, Jalapium, Gialapium, Galapa, Gialapa, etc. (1). Paullini even says (2) that the name Apalagi was substituted, which is only one of the precedents whose letters have been transposed.[1]
