Other "Xfire" name uses

Google gives me a few more "Xfire" websites than just the IM client and the Web Application Management tool from Xaffire, Inc. mentioned at the top. Is it needed to add more disambiguation links, or even to create a whole disambiguation page? If not, is the Xaffire link needed, as that doesn't seem "fair" to the other Xfire websites/products/whatnot. Retodon8 01:44, 17 December 2005 (UTC)

Perhaps, if the other mentions are notable, we can make another page and say "for other uses of the name Xfire, see Xfire (disambiguation)" — Ilγαηερ (Tαlκ) 01:46, 17 December 2005 (UTC)
I agree, this article is probably what people are looking for when they type "Xfire", so your solution sounds right. However, I personally don't know what other "xfire" stuff is notable, including the Xaffire thing. I suppose we could just wait, although I'm still not sure the Xaffire link should remain, especially since the article doesn't even exist (yet). Retodon8 03:08, 17 December 2005 (UTC)
Another XFire stuff is http://xfire.codehaus.org/ Yurez 22:37, 10 August 2006 (UTC)

Delete "Xfire (computer game)" redirect

Why does it have this redirect "Xfire (computer game)", it's not a computer game, that's very far from what xfire is, so this should be changed.--Dp462090 22:29, 17 March 2006 (UTC)

I agree, the redirect is useless; nobody will ever type "Xfire (computer game)" looking for an instant messenger, and the redirect article only makes searching more difficult. You can submit a deletion request yourself; Wikipedia:Redirects for deletion/Header. Retodon8 15:49, 19 March 2006 (UTC)
No, X-fire used to be a game, it's has nothing to do with this, it simply has the same name. X-fire should redirect to this article instead though. --Trusader 01:07, 7 December 2006 (UTC)

xfire is not a video game it is an instant messenger, you dont consider AIM, yahoo messenger, or MSN video games, why would xfire be any different? if there was a program or game called xfire, there should be another article on it, just like "kiss" is a band, and a way to show affection.

How does something like this make money for Viacom?

Windows 98 Support

I have herd that Xfire has dropped support for Windows 98? Does anyone know for sure, if so the infobox would need to be updated. Credema 06:09, 23 July 2006 (UTC)

Support has been dropped as of January 2007, so I updated the appropriate areas. Varsindarkin 08:31, 13 January 2007 (UTC)

Mac Support

There is a Mac client called Xblaze. Should Xfire still be in the "Windows-only intstant messengers" category? --Njk 23:03, 28 July 2006 (UTC)

I added a "‹The template Talkfact is being considered for merging.› [citation needed]" tag to the statement at the bottom of the Technology section where it's stated that the developers of Xfire will work on a Mac version once the PC version is "perfected." First of all, what does perfected even mean in this context? Xfire is being (and must be) constantly updated to keep up with new games that are coming out. It will never be "perfected." Second, I could be imaging this, but I seem to recall one of the Xfire team members publicly stating that they had no intention to create a Mac version of Xfire due to the shortage of games available for the Mac. So if someone could provide a citation for that comment, it would be very helpful. Otherwise I suggest it should probably be removed. Tidalflame 00:25, 5 September 2007 (UTC)

Adding information in wrong places

Please stop adding information to the article that does not belong in certain sections. Particularly, the information stated about XBlaze. XBlaze does not have to do with the technology of how Xfire works. Please file it under the User Extensions catagory. Also, please take note that the article is about Xfire's client and protocol.

Xfire Distributed With D-Link's Routers

Would the info mentioned in "Xfire Distributed With D-Link's Routers" be relevant enough to mention? Retodon8 13:10, 20 October 2006 (UTC)

xfire is included with other software/hardware as well, it came on the CD to my video card...i think its enough to at least mention.

pronunciation

The correct pronuntiation of Xfire is ex- fire, as shown on X-fire help home page(at top of the page) --Robin63 21:18, 10 February 2007 (UTC)

Info Box (MTV)

At the bottom of the box is information such as stuff about Viacom, ect. However there is a whole thing about MTV. Listings of different MTV channels and so on. I have no idea what this is doing on the X-fire page, and I suspect it is spam. Howver I wanted to make sure there wasn't a good reason for having it there, (Although I can't see why there would be) before delting that part, just incase someone was not spamming, I will probably delete this part in a few days, unless anyone has anything to say about it? --Robin63 01:32, 12 February 2007 (UTC)

make sure that when you edit this article for features supported in-game, you use correct examples, i.e. World of Warcraft is not supported by the instant joining feature. Kyle 15:03, 1 March 2007 (UTC)

Lack of Development NPOV

"Useless Junk"? To be honest Xfire is one of the most highly developed programs I know of with frequent updates, this seems to have been written in anger at the introduction of the /me command. The link has nothing to do with this command and is actually based on the changing of names: "Nickname changes are now shown to your friends immediately (some of you have waited two years for this feature, so enjoy it!).".

Propose to delete this section, if there's no reasonable objection within the next few days I'll make sure of it. MattieTK 20:50, 10 May 2007 (UTC)

I deleted it once, seems it found its way back. I support removing it again, its unencylopedic NPOV the ways its written. Russeasby 20:55, 10 May 2007 (UTC)

"useless junk" refers to things that are not needed, such as the /me implementation, i see no need for it, after all, it is meant for IRC but we arent here to tell them what to put in a program, but the people that do support the program are being let down.

The reference to the release notes was pointing out that the xfire developers themselves admit that they do take a rather long time to get features supported (2 years is a very long time from the first time a feature request was asked for and it really wasn't a necessary feature in relation to xfire's notable features, furthermore encouraging opinions on lack of development)

If you guys/girls can not see our (the people who are eagerly waiting for usefull support and features) point of view, then you have no choice to delete it, I hope this is not the case. Please try to keep an open mind about this. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 207.31.30.11 (talkcontribs) 3:08 pm GMT-8 PST -metroed user-

This is an encyclopedia, not a forum to discuss your likes and dislikes of a product or your opinions of the company developing it. The section is most certainly POV and the language inappropriate. Russeasby 22:06, 10 May 2007 (UTC)

It should still be noted that they are not putting full effort into development. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 75.0.187.228 (talkcontribs)

This is your opinion, ie POV (point of view), this is an encylopedia, not a place for opinions, this is a place for verifiable facts. Russeasby 01:13, 11 May 2007 (UTC)

i have to say adding something that doesn't benefit the program is considered useless in my book—Preceding unsigned comment added by Casemods (talkcontribs)

Xfire Events

Whoever created this section needs to learn grammar. Can someone please expand on this section because one sentence is useless.

Info about Pinkslip (was in Support section)

Original text:

With the growing number of Macintosh gamers, there was an increase in demand for a Mac OS X version of Xfire.[1]. In February of 2006, a Mac developer group called Pinkslip began their attempt to make a Mac compatible Xfire client. [citation needed] Xfire, Inc. gave no official word on supporting other operating systems but did not deny the possibility of one being developed[2].

Feel free to add it back to the article, ONLY, if you find a relevant section to place it in. In my opinion, it does not need to be added back. Gammasts (talk) 22:42, 20 January 2008 (UTC)

gfire compability

is gfire really compatible with pidgin?

says it "is a gaim plugin which connects to the xfire network" on the gfire home page linked in the article —Preceding unsigned comment added by 62.119.8.188 (talk) 00:06, 8 February 2008 (UTC)

Gaim is now Pidgin, so yes Gammasts (talk) 19:29, 12 February 2008 (UTC)

Xblaze addition discussion

Stealth500's text:

Although this allows communications with other Mac's, it does not have any features that Xfire does.

I removed this because the sentence is not cited, nor is it true. (For one, I know this, as I am a developer of Xblaze and I run Xfire Plus, so I know a damn bit about Xfire). Xblaze can communicate with any client on the Xfire network, not just "Mac's". In addition, multiple Macs is not spelled "Mac's". I don't know why you put Xfire in triple quotes, as you mean to say the Xfire Client. However, your statement is false again, because it does have features as the original Xfire client. Chat, detecting games, and displaying friend's games and statuses, are all considered "features", and are all supported by Xblaze. You said "does not have any", which is the false statement, and isn't cited anyways. This is why I removed your edit. I don't feel that it is required to have a sentence, as if you look at the section the item is in, and the context, it is a given that it does not have the complete features as the original Xfire Client. In which case, you should add that sentence to all of the items in the list there. DO NOT revert the page after I remove it again, unless you would like me to contact an Administrator. Instead, please discuss here what you feel is neccesary to put in place, or just drop the case as it should be. Gammasts (talk) 21:36, 17 February 2008 (UTC)

Music plugin

The music plugin now supports more than just Windows Media player. Spdaniel91 (talk) 22:40, 18 February 2008 (UTC)

The "Xfire Music Plugin" is different than "Xfire Plus Music Plugin". The former is a direct plugin for WMP, where as the later is a program that works with multiple music players. Gammasts (talk) 03:24, 19 February 2008 (UTC)

Performance issues

I seem to recall a couple years ago there was a big blow up about performance issues with xfire. Some games were really suffering under it. I'm not sure if any reliable sources picked up on it or not, searching is slow as a lot of different things use the xfire name. This article is really light on history and could use some more information about what's happened to the company since inception (but notable events, not trivial things like their april fools jokes).--Crossmr (talk) 13:57, 12 September 2008 (UTC)

Define how much of big blow up. I've been using Xfire for years and I don't really recall having severe performance issues with most of the games I've run with Xfire on. The only exception to this rule seems to be Battlefield 2 but I doubt it had anything to do with Xfire more than it had to do with the fact that Bf2 was a major resource hog. 2 gig's of ram wasn't really the norm until early 2006 I believe. The Infoview skins website is basically a spam site.

While it does have some skins, basically all it is doing is blocking access to every page unless you do some surveys.

XFire Store

XFire now has a digital store where users can buy games and download them, similar to Steam or Windows / XBL. Here is the US link: [1]65.10.114.238 (talk) 19:55, 10 October 2009 (UTC)

Number of supported games

GameSlayerGS, I know the email they sent out says 1720 games, but the reference used says there are actually just over 1500 games. I'm thinking the figure in the email was a typo, but the reference used is the reason I changed the number. Anunnakki (talk) 20:54, 22 December 2009 (UTC)

Alright, I was going to ask about how I should reference that since it is a newsletter in the form of an email not a webpage; so I'll leave it as is but I'm going to try to find another, more proper, reference that says 1720 games. GameSlayerGS (talk) 12:23, 24 December 2009 (UTC)

"Added in version x.xx"

I think specifying which specific version number and date each feature was added is unnecessary, and potentially damaging to the article's overall readability. I think the Features section should just be a concise summary of each of Xfire's current outstanding features, and updates to the features can be worked into the writing itself, rather than making the respective section a history, of sorts, for each feature. I propose reworking the Features section to exclude dates and version numbers, so that the focus is just on the current features. –Anunnakki (talk) 01:29, 20 February 2010 (UTC)

add this to the article?

Xfire just announced on their website that they were purchased by a corporation and over half of their employees were fired.--SaturnElite (talk) 22:19, 2 August 2010 (UTC)

We enjoyed working for you for the last 127 releases and wish we could stay to create the next 127. Good bye, good luck, and game on. --- The Xfire Team

Regarding recent vandalism.

I would like to point everyone to my talk page in case you haven't seen it. User_talk:DAOWAce The person who vandalized this article under my account was not me. In fact, I did the opposite, undoing vandalism and actually requesting this article to be protected. It is disgusting to see a close friend do something like this to me. I sincerely apologize to anyone who was forced to put any effort into undoing what he did and reporting my account for persistent vandalism. He will never be forgiven. DAOWAce (talk) 05:07, 6 August 2010 (UTC)

No section for criticism? Is this a biased article?

Xfire is bundled with trashware that uses opt-in language "by checking the boxes below you agree...", yet is clearly opt-out in a wizard installer (with said options pre-checked) where it is easy to roll through with the next button and accidentally install their toolbar in Internet Explorer, Firefox, and Chrome - as well as hijack the home and search pages of those browsers.

It is also completely incapable of remembering the preference "do not detect installed games on start-up". This is likely because this preference is stored on a per user basis, and those settings are not loaded until you are logged in, yet the game detection step occurs prior to user login.

Xfire is frequently unable to share files between some users, while those same users can share files with other friends; this occasionally results in two friends only able to share files by using a third friend as an intermediary. Sometimes the ability of a pair of users to share files changes after a patch is installed (it mysteriously start working or stops working after an update). Rebooting both computers in some cases fixes this problem.

On Windows Vista and later Xfire frequently cannot successfully run its auto-updater and will stay in a loop of downloading the 7MB+ installer, failing to install, relaunching, and downloading the 7MB+ installer again. This forces many users to do a manual update, where an accidental double click on the next button can install their unwanted toolbar and hijack the users web browsers.

The Xfire in game feature severely reduces framerates on low to middle end graphics cards, taking players from 20 fps down to 8 fps in some games. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 168.103.124.166 (talk) 21:46, 3 March 2012 (UTC)

All of the above can be verified by actually installing and using their game client. The framerate issue can be recreated on any laptop with 1GB shared video memory and ~128MB dedicated (I have experienced this on 5 different laptops, all in the $400-$600 price range). I am not posting this on the article, but I am using this talk page to point out what I believe to be a deficiency in the article - unlike most Wikipedia articles, there is no section for criticism or controversy. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 168.103.124.166 (talk) 21:54, 3 March 2012 (UTC)
