China blocks access to Wikipedia on an intermittent basis. As such, I haven't been able to do much work on this entry, which I had intended to include last year.

The following sections are things I wrote, but was unable to find textual verification for. They're stories I heard from locals. I assume that textual references exist, but I'm not able to read Chinese, and I expect that there aren't any English-language sources. I'll archive them here in case someone can verify them at a later point.

History

Legendary

People in Xuanhua have a myth about the foundation of thier city. They say that in the distant past, a prince was exiled from the king's court and was forced to wander the desert. As he ran out of food and water, he collapsed unconscious. Knowing that he was innocent, the sky (or heaven - tiān, 天) took pity on the prince. A great wind blew away the desert's sand and the fertile land of Xuanhua was revealed. To this day, there is a large sandy hill in the South-West of Xuanhua which is said to be where the sand came to rest.

The other story told about Xuanhua is that during the Manchu uprising, which established the Qin dynasty, an army marched to Xuanhua, needing to take the city in order to reach Beijing. As the army approached, the city of Xuanhua rose up into the air. Faced with the impossibility of capturing the flying city, the Manchu army was discouraged. Then, a Manchu archer fired an arrow at the city, and Xuanhua came back to earth and was captured.
